Uniondale, N.Y. - The baseball team opened play in the NCAA East 2 Regional Tournament this morning with a 6-0 shutout of the University of New Haven.

Charlie Cucchiara tied a single-season record, earning his 11th win of the season in a complete-game shutout. Senior
Matt Yip also tied a single-season record, sending his 13th home run over the season over the right field fence.
How it Happened
- The second-seeded Lions went right to work in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Gavin McAlonie doubled down the right field line before Yip's homer made it 2-0.
- Sophomore Sean Welsh was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning, moving to third on an outfield single from freshman Patrick Sanchez.Â
- Senior Chris Giardino's sacrifice fly plated a third run for the cardinal and white.Â
- The seventh-seeded Chargers threatened in the sixth inning, loading the bases with three-straight singles.Â
- Cucchiara sat down Owen Pincince before forcing a double play to get out of the jam without surrendering a run.Â
- The home half of the eighth inning started with another hit batter with Giardino reaching first.Â
- Junior JJ DeVito singled before a sacrifice bunt from senior Aidan Larkin put runners on second and third.Â
- McAlonie drove in two runs with a double down the left field line to make it 5-0.
- A balk would advance the second baseman 90 feet from home and set the table for a sacrifice fly from Yip to round out the scoring.Â
- UNH's hitters were sent down in order in the top of the ninth inning.

- McAlonie led the Lions with two hits, both of which were doubles, and scored two runs.Â
- Yip led with three RBI, going 1-for-3 with the home run and sacrifice fly.Â
- DeVito, Welsh, and Sanchez each recorded a hit with Giardino picking up an RBI.Â
- Cucchiara fanned four batters in the shutout.Â
