Pomona, N.Y. – The 16
th ranked Molloy baseball team returned to ECC play this afternoon against St. Thomas Aquinas, but the Lions would fall to the Spartans, 4-1, Wednesday afternoon at Clover Stadium. Molloy moves to 30-10 overall and 12-4 in East Coast Conference competition, while the Spartans improve to 16-23 overall and 7-9 in league play.
How it Happened
- After scoreless baseball in the opening two innings, St. Thomas Aquinas took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a RBI single from CJ Cumbo and a run scoring following an error.
- The Spartans tacked on to its lead in the fourth extending its lead to 3-0 following a second RBI single this time from David Potenza.
- After being held in check through six innings, the Lions looked to crack the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, with runners on first and second with one out, but a double play would halt the Lions' rally and keep them off the scoreboard.
- The home team added a run of insurance in the bottom of the seventh to extend its lead, 4-0.
- Molloy got on the board in the bottom of the eighth inning when senior Aidan Larkin singled to score junior JJ DeVito to cut the deficit to three, 4-1.
- The cardinal and white would get the lead off man on base to begin the top of the ninth inning, but the runner would be stranded on the basepath as the Spartans would close the game and secure the victory, 4-1.
Top Performances
- Larkin tallied a hit and an RBI.
- Seniors Gavin McAlonie and Anthony Manisero totaled two hits each.
- On the mound, junior JC Kiss tossed six innings allowing nine hits, three runs, two earned, and struck out six.
- Senior Timmy Mott pitched the final two frames allowing one unearned run and not giving up a hit.
