Uniondale, N.Y. – Collecting over 20 hits and 20 runs for the fourth time this season, the 16
th ranked Molloy baseball team topped the Cougars of Caldwell University, 23-7, Tuesday afternoon at Mitchel Field. The Lions improve to 27-9 on the campaign, while the Cougars move to 8-17 on the season.
How it Happened
- The Lions struck first with an RBI single from senior Anthony Manisero in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
- Caldwell wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, taking the lead, 2-1, following a two-run home run in the top of the second inning.
- Molloy responded in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Sean Welsh knotted the contest at two with a run scoring single and junior JJ DeVito capped the inning with a double to plate Welsh to put the Lions in front, 3-2.
- The cardinal and white continued to add to its lead in the bottom of the third. Manisero doubled to bring home senior Matt Yip and and junior Patrick Sanchez knocked in a run with a ground ball to open the lead to three, 5-2.
- The home team used a six-run fourth inning to break the contest open, 11-2. DeVito kicked off the scoring with his second RBI double, senior Gavin McAlonie followed suit scoring DeVito with a double, senior Matt Yip then came to the plate and collected a two-run triple, and Manisero capped the inning with a two-run home run off the first pitch he saw.
- Caldwell plated two in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit down to seven, 11-4.
- Manisero would complete the cycle with a one out triple in the bottom of the sixth and would come around to score following a single from freshman Joe Burriesci. Molloy would plate two more runs in the frame to take a 10-run advantage, 14-4.
- Molloy would go on to score five runs in the seventh inning and four in the eight to go on and win the contest, 23-7.
Top Performances
- Manisero collected in his first four at bats, drove in four runs, and scored three times.
- Sophomore Sean Serrano collected four RBI in two at bats off the bench.
- Sanchez added three RBIs.
- DeVito and Yip totaled two hits and two RBI apiece.
- On the mound, graduate student Robert Lucano tossed seven innings allowing four runs, three earned, six hits, and fanned six to improve to 2-3 on the campaign.
