No. 16 Baseball Sweeps Twin Bill at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The 16th ranked Molloy baseball team swept the Mavericks of Mercy University (10-6 and 14-5) Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions improve to 25-9 overall and 11-3 in East Coast Conference play, while the Mavericks 14-22 overall and 4-7 in league play.

Game One: Molloy 10, Mercy 6
  • The Lions started quickly plating three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Anthony Manisero singled up the middle to plate the game's first run and junior Nicholas Dagnello drove in two with a ground-rule double.
  • Mercy got one run back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single to cut the deficit to two, 3-1, at the end of one inning of action.
  • Three more runs crossed the plate in the top of the second for the Lions to open the lead to five, 6-1. Senior Chris Giardino scored freshman Joe Burriesci with a single, and junior JJ DeVito capped the inning with a two-run home run.
  • The home team plated a run in the bottom of the third following an inside the park home run to come within four, 6-2.
  • The cardinal and white totaled its third three-run inning in the fifth with Dagnello being the focal point of the scoring. The junior tripled home two runs and came around to score following a balk to open a seven-run advantage, 9-2.
  • Senior Gavin McAlonie added to the lead in the sixth with an RBI single to give the Lions its biggest lead of the game, 10-2.
  • Mercy would score four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally would stop there as the Lions would win game one, 10-6.
  • Dagnello collected two hits and four RBI.
  • Manisero led the team with four hits.
  • DeVito collected two hits, two runs scored, two RBI, and a home run.
  • Senior Ryan Hynes pitched eight innings allowing four runs, on eight hits, and struck out two to improve to 6-1 on the season. 
Game Two: Molloy 14, Mercy 5
  • Game two begin with the Lions scoring two runs in the top of the first. Senior Aidan Larkin brought in a run with a triple and came around to score following an RBI ground out to put Molloy in front, 2-0.
  • Mercy cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame with a run scoring following a wild pitch.
  • Molloy put together a three-run top of the third to go ahead, 5-1. McAlonie drove in Larkin with a single and came around to score following an error and the final run of the inning scored following a fielder's choice.
  • In the top of the fourth, DeVito hit his second home run of the afternoon to extend the lead, 6-1.
  • A five-run fifth inning gave the Lions a commanding 11-1 advantage. The scoring began with a run crossing the plate following a wild pitch, freshman Anthony Marsillo walked to score a run, DeVito drove in a pair with a single, and McAlonie capped the inning with a fielder's choice that plated a run.
  • The Mavericks rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to six, 11-5.
  • The cardinal and white totaled its fifth three-run inning of the afternoon in the top of the seventh. McAlonie knocked home a run with a single, senior Matt Yip drove in a run following a double, and Manisero capped the game with an RBI ground out to give the Lions the victory, 14-5.
  • McAlonie paced the squad with four RBI.
  • DeVito totaled three runs, three hits, three RBI, and a home run.
  • Larkin, Yip, Manisero, Dagnello, and Marsillo drove in a run each.
  • Graduate student Matthew Fried tossed 5.2 innings allowing five runs, two earned, four hits, and struck out a career-high 10 to collect his fifth win of the campaign.
