No. 16 Baseball Falls to Felician in Extra Innings

Lyndhurst, N.J. – The 16th ranked Molloy baseball used a two-run ninth inning to force extra innings Wednesday afternoon, but ultimately fell, 3-2, to the Golden Falcons of Felician University at Breslin Field. The Lions move to 22-9 on the campaign, while the Golden Falcons improve to 20-17 on the season.
 
How it Happened
  • A pitcher's duel ensued to begin the contest, as Molloy starter Robert Lucano and Felician starter Derek Vonhorn allowed a combined two hits over the first three innings of action.
  • The home team cracked the scoreboard in the fourth inning, with a run coming in following an error and an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Lions offense was held in check, with only one hit to show through eight innings.
  • Down 2-0 in the top of the ninth, junior JJ DeVito led the inning off with a single and advanced to third following a single from senior Aidan Larkin, putting runners on the corners with no one out.
  • Senior Gavin McAlonie stepped up to the place and ripped a double into right center field to score DeVito and Larkin from second to bring the contest all square at two.
  • McAlonie advanced to third following a wild pitch, putting the go-ahead run 90 feet away, but Felician would strand McAlonie at third to keep the contest tied at two.
  • Felician looked to win the contest in the bottom of the ninth. With a runner on second and one out, the Golden Falcons ripped a single into left field, but DeVito came up firing and nailed the winning run at the plate to send the game to extra innings.
  • In the top of the tenth, senior Chris Giardino and freshman Joe Burriesci, setting up the Lions with runners on second and third with one out. After intentionally walking DeVito to load the bases, the Golden Falcons would convert consecutive strikeouts to end the rally.
  • Felician would waste no time in the bottom of the tenth, leading off the inning with a walk-off home run to win the contest, 3-2.
Top Performances
  • McAlonie tallied a hit drove in two runs.
  • DeVito, Larkin, Giardino, Burriesci, and senior Matt Yip totaled a hit each.
  • Graduate student Robert Lucano tossed seven innings allowing five hits, two runs, none earned, and struck out five in the no decision.
