No. 13 Baseball Tops Bentley, 8-6

Boca Raton, Fla. – The 13th-ranked Molloy baseball team opened its Florida weekend with an 8-6 victory over the Falcons of Bentley University Thursday morning at Lynn University. The Lions improve to 9-2 on the season, while the Falcons move to 8-4.

How it Happened
  • Bentley cracked the scoreboard first with runs in the second and third inning on the back of a solo home run and a RBI double to go ahead, 2-0.
  • Molloy cut the lead in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the third when junior Thomas Lebrecht scored following a wild pitch.
  • The Falcons regained its two-run lead, 3-1, in the top of the fourth scoring a run off a wild pitch.
  • The cardinal and white pushed two runs across in the bottom of the frame to knot the contest at three. Senior Matt Yip belted a solo home run over the left field fence and freshman Joe Burriesci brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly.
  • In the fifth, freshman Charlie Imhof broke the tie with an RBI single into left field to score sophomore Sean Welsh and junior Patrick Sanchez registered a sacrifice fly to give the Lions its first lead of the contest, 5-3.
  • The Lions would tack on three runs in the seventh inning, Sanchez recorded his second sacrifice fly and junior Nicholas Dagnello worked a nine-pitch at bat that ended with a two-RBI single to score Imhof and Yip to extend the Lions' lead, 8-3.
  • Bentley cut into the deficit in the top of the eighth following a solo home run to come within four, 8-4.
  • In the ninth, the Falcons continued to fight their way back registering a two-RBI single to come within two, 8-6.
  • Bentley brought the go ahead run to the plate with one out and two runners on in the ninth, but redshirt junior Connor Huckemeyer converted a strikeout and got the final out with a fly out to secure the victory.
Top Performances
  • Dagnello collected two hits and two RBI.
  • Yip blasted his fourth home run of the season.
  • Imhof drew three walks, scored twice, and knocked in a run.
  • On the mound, graduate student Charlie Cucchiara pitched seven innings, allowing three runs, on six hits, and struck out a pair to move to 3-0 on the campaign.
