Women’s Basketball Concludes 2023-24 Campaign Against UDC

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy women's basketball team fell to the Firebirds of The University of the District of Columbia, 83-71, Saturday afternoon inside Quealy Gynasium. The Lions conclude the season 10-17 overall and 4-12 in East Coast Conference play, while the Firebirds improve to 19-9 overall and 11-5 in league play.
 
The team honored its two seniors Isabel Sanchez and Trinity Hudson in a pre-game ceremony.
 
How it Happened
  • UDC started the contest on a 10-3 run midway through the first quarter.
  • Over the next three minutes, the Lions collected baskets from Sanchez, and juniors Janel Moore and Danielle Hippner to come within three, 12-9.
  • The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, but a three-point play from the road team gave them a 18-13 lead heading into the second.
  • The Firebirds opened the third quarter on a 11-2 rally, collecting four field goals and three three-point baskets to pull ahead, 29-15.
  • Five straight points from Hudson cut the deficit to single-digits, 29-20, with 5:27 left in the second quarter.
  • Over the next two minutes, UDC regained its double-digit lead, 37-22.
  • Back-to-back three-point field goals from sophomore Brianna James and Moore brought the Lions within nine, 37-28, with under three minutes remaining in the first half.
  • UDC regained its 15-point lead with 1:15 left in the stanza and took a 45-33 advantage into halftime.
  • Molloy began the second half on a 7-2 run on the back of a pair of three-point shots and a free throw to come within seven, 47-40, 1:51 into the third quarter.
  • The Firebirds answered, doubling its lead back to 14, 59-45, over the course of the next four minutes propelled by shooting four-of-four from downtown.
  • Over the next three minutes of action, the Lions cut the deficit down to six, 59-53, shooting six-of-six from the foul line and collecting one field goal with 2:40 left in the third stanza.
  • The road team would open a 10-point advantage, 67-57, heading into the fourth quarter.
  •  The cardinal and white started the final stanza quickly, rallying to a 10-3 run to bring the contest within one possession, 70-67, with 6:05 remaining on the scoreboard.
  • The Firebirds would outscore the Lions 13-4 for the remainder of the quarter and go on to close the victory, 83-71.
Top Performances
  • Sanchez paced the Lions with 20 points.
  • Hudson collected her 17th double-double of the season scoring 16 points and bringing in 14 rebounds.
  • Moore totaled 12 points and dished out six assists.
  • Hippner rounded out the top scorers tallying 12 points, eight rebounds, and six blocks.
