Manisero Knocks In Career High Six Runs; Baseball Tops Assumption

Morehead City, N.C. – 10 members of the Lions drove in a run while collecting 21 hits as a club, as the Molloy baseball team defeated the Greyhounds of Assumption University, 26-12, Sunday afternoon at Big Rock Stadium. The Lions improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Greyhounds move to 2-2.
 
How it Happened
  • The Lions began the contest scoring four runs in the opening inning to take a 4-0 lead. Junior Nicholas Dagnello drew a walk to score a run, senior Anthony Manisero drove in a run with an RBI single, senior Gavin McAlonie scored on a double steal, and Manisero scored following a pick off to cap the inning.
  • The bats continued to stay hot in the second inning, as the cardinal and white would have eight runners cross the plate. The inning was highlighted by Manisero who drove in a pair with a single and senior Matt Yip who connected and drove the ball over the left field fence for a three-run home run to increase the lead to 12-0.
  • Molloy would tack on four additional runs in the third to open its lead to 16-0 off a pair of RBI singles from Dagnello and Manisero, a sacrifice fly from junior Patrick Sanchez, and an RBI double from sophomore Sean Welsh.
  • Assumption was able to tally four runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning all on the back of three home runs, two of them three-run home runs to cut the deficit to nine, 16-7.
  • The cardinal and white collected six runs in the sixth inning and four in the eighth to take a 26-7 lead, and would go on to win the contest, 26-12.
Top Performances
  • Manisero paced the squad with four hits and knocked in a career-high six runs while scoring three times.
  • Senior Aidan Larkin and junior JJ DeVito scored four runs apiece.
  • Yip blasted his first home run of the season and drove in three runs.
  • Dagnello and Welsh collected two RBI each.
  • Sanchez, McAlonie senior Chris Giardino, and sophomore Grayson Saltzer, tallied an RBI each.
  • Freshmen Thomas Charlwood, Charlie Imhof, and Anthony Marsillo collected their first collegiate hits while Joe Burriesci drew a walk in his first career at bat.
  • On the mound, senior Ryan Hynes tossed four innings allowing four runs on seven hits to collect his first win of the season.
  • Freshman Jack Schulz saw his first collegiate action on the bump, pitching the final inning giving up five runs, none earned, and striking out three.

The Lions will travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. as they'll play a double-header against former ECC foe Bridgeport Friday, February 23. The first game of the twin bill is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
