Baseball Concludes Regular Season with Doubleheader Split Against #11 SNHU

Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team split a doubleheader with #11 Southern New Hampshire University this afternoon, topping the Penmen 9-3 before falling 13-3. Molloy concludes the regular season 33-15 while Southern New Hampshire sits at 37-10 to finish the year. 33 wins sets a new program record for wins in the regular season.
 
Before the game, the program recognized its eight members of the senior class: Robby Keane, Jake McCarthy, Mike Andreoli, Chris Wiercinski, Richard Gennaro, Brian Morrisey, Chris Peralta, and AJ Verga.
 
Game One: Molloy 9, SNHU 3
  • After a scoreless first inning, the away team tacked on two unearned runs on a pair of singles to take a 2-0 lead after two innings of play.
  • The Lions knotted the contest at two in the fourth when junior Garrett Scavelli homered and junior Gavin McAlonie singled home a run.
  • Molloy continued its momentum into the fifth, Scavelli drove in a run with a double, a run scored following a balk, and junior Aidan Larkin capped the inning with a two-RBI single to push Molloy in front, 6-2.
  • The cardinal and white scored runs in its third straight inning in the sixth, junior Matt Yip blasted a home run over the left field fence and junior Anthony Manisero recorded a sacrifice fly to extend its lead, 8-2.
  • Manisero plated the ninth run of the afternoon with a single to extend the lead, 9-2.
  • SNHU added a run in the ninth, but Molloy would close on the contest on top, 9-3.
  • Senior Charlie Cucchiara started the contest tossing three innings allowing two unearned runs on two hits while striking out four.
  • Graduate student Mike Andreoli picked up the victory throwing three scoreless innings allowing three hits and punching out three to improve to 8-0 on the campaign.
  • Genarro pitched the final three innings allowing one hit and one run. 
Game Two: Molloy 3, SNHU 13
  • The Lions opened the contest with a run in the first inning following an RBI single from McAlonie.
  • Southern New Hampshire answered in the third scoring four runs, three runs scoring via a home run to take a 4-1 lead after three innings.
  • The road team took a 5-1 advantage following its third home run of the afternoon in the fourth inning.
  • The cardinal and white fought back in the fifth, a pair of run scoring singles from sophomore JJ DeVito and Scavelli cut the deficit to two, 5-3, midway through the game.
  • The Penmen tallied four runs in the seventh and ninth innings and held Molloy scoreless to take game two, 13-3.
Up Next
The road to the East Coast Conference Championship will go through Mitchel Field beginning Thursday, May 11. After winning the regular season, Molloy will be the top seed in the tournament. The remainder of the regular season games will conclude this weekend and the schedule will be revealted following their competition.
