Sean Welsh, the Molloy baseball swept the Lions of Lincoln University (3-0 and 4-1) Friday afternoon at Mitchel Field. Molloy improves to 30-14 overall and 17-5 in East Coast Conference play, while Lincoln moves to 11-30-1 overall and 4-14 in league play.
Game One: Molloy 3, Lincoln 0
- Game one was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel, as Cucchiara and Lincoln starter David Estevez surrendered three hits combined in the first three innings of action.
- The cardinal and white created its first chance in the fourth inning with runners on first and second, but Lincoln was able to keep them off the scoreboard to keep the contest scoreless.
- Molloy broke through in the sixth inning with two runners in scoring position, graduate student Jake McCarthy found the hole between third and short to score two runs to put Molloy in front, 2-0.
- The home team added a run of insurance in the eighth when sophomore Tom Lebrecht recorded a sacrifice fly to extend the lead, 3-0, where the game would stay through the ninth to clinch a game one victory.
- Cucchiara pitched a complete game allowing three hits while striking out three and throwing 96 pitches to improve to 7-3 on the campaign. With the victory, Cucchiara has tied a program record for win in a career (21).
- McCarthy drove in two runs.
- Juniors Garrett Scavelli and Aidan Larking talled two hits each.
Game Two: Molloy 4, Lincoln 1
- Similarly to game one, the second contest began with two scoreless innings between the two starting pitchers.
- In the third, junior Anthony Manisero broke the scoreless tie with a sacrifice fly to put Molloy in front, 1-0.
- Lincoln responded in the top of the fifth knotting the contest at one following an RBI single.
- It didn't take long for the cardinal and white to answer as they had three cross the plate in the bottom of the frame. Manisero drove a two-run double and came around to score following an RBI double from junior Aidan Larkin to push the cardinal and white ahead, 4-1.
- The road team looked to tie the contest in the seventh inning getting the game-tying run to the plate with two outs, but Molloy would close the door and sweep the doubleheader, 4-1.
- Welsh tossed five innings allowing four hits, one unearned run and struck out one to pick up his first collegiate win and move to 1-2 on the season.
- Senior Richard Gennnaro tossed the final two hitless innings and struck out three to collect his fourth save of the year.
