Women’s Basketball Slips to Dominican in Overtime Thriller

Rutherford, N.J. – The Molloy women's basketball team played the Dominican University Chargers in the opening game of the Felician Holiday Classic Saturday afternoon. The Lions fell in overtime, 70-67, inside Joal and Joseph Job Gymnasium on the campus of Felician University. The Lions move to 1-3 on the campaign, while the Chargers improve to 1-4.
 
How it Happened
  • The two teams opened the contest trading shots, but a layup from senior Trinity Hudson opened a three-point lead, 8-5, midway through the opening stanza.
  • Molloy concluded the quarter on a 15-6 rally with contributions from five different members of the squad to take a 23-11 lead into the second stanza.
  • The run continued into the second quarter as sophomore Sophia Yearwood drained a three-point basket to extend the lead, 26-11, 15 seconds into the second.
  • The Chargers cut the deficit to nine, 29-20, on the back of a 9-3 run with 3:45 remaining in the first half.
  • Three points from Hudson and two from junior Samantha Muller down the stretch gave the Lions a 10-point advantage, 34-24, heading into halftime.
  • Dominican came out of the half with a fury, putting together a 13-5 run to bring them within two, 39-37, with 2:23 to play in the first quarter.
  • A pair of free throws from graduate student Isabel Sanchez and a jumper from sophomore Rosa Rizzitelli gave the Lions a four-point lead, 45-41, heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Hudson began the fourth stanza with a pair of layups to extend the lead to six, 49-43, with 7:49 left in the quarter.
  • The Chargers answered with a 7-0 rally to take its first lead since the first quarter, 50-49, midway through the fourth.
  • A three-point basket from Sanchez was answered by the Chargers to knot the contest at 52 with 4:34 left to play.
  • Hudson reclaimed the lead for the cardinal and white, 54-52, with a layup 20 seconds later.
  • 1:11 would go by before Dominican would tie the contest at 54 following a layup from Cayla Howard with over three minutes to go in regulation.
  • Junior Janel Moore created a turnover and was fouled on the break and went to the free throw line. The guard converted a pair of free throws to put Molloy in front, 56-54, with 1:17 left on the scoreboard.
  • Dominican guard Alexis Suarez nailed a jump shot with 57 seconds to play to bring the contest all square, 56-56, where the game would stay and head into overtime.
  • After beginning the overtime period with two free throws from the Chargers, Molloy tied the contest at 58 following a layup from Hudson.
  • The Chargers put together a 7-0 run to take a commanding, 65-58, lead with 2:26 to play.
  • The Lions would trade baskets for the remainder of the contest, with Moore hitting a three with under 10 seconds to play, but the Chargers would hold on to close the victory, 70-67.
Top Performances
  • Hudson led the Lions with 19 points and a tied a career-high with 17 rebounds.
  • Muller collected 17 points and eight rebounds.
  • Moore added 10 points, seven assists, and three steals.
  • Sanchez tallied seven points and seven assists in her season debut.

The Lions will return to the court tomorrow (Nov. 26) to take on the Golden Falcons of Felician University. Tip-off is slated for 12:00 p.m.
