Second Half Surge Leads Women’s Basketball Past Queens College

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The women's basketball team put together a second-half come back to defeat Queens College, 66-44, this afternoon inside Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 8-8 on the season and 4-4 in East Coast Conference play while Queens fell to 2-14 (1-8 ECC) with the loss.
 
How it Happened
  • Graduate student Maya Thomas began the contest by netting five of the Lions' first nine points. Molloy held a 9-5 advantage with 6:40 to go in the opening quarter.
  • The road team ended the first quarter on an 8-2 scoring run to lead 13-11.
  • Queens College began the second quarter scoring the first five points. The Knights led, 18-11, with over seven minutes to play in the first half.
  • Sophomore Trinity Hudson scored all six Molloy points in the second quarter. The Lions trailed, 22-17, at halftime.
  • The road team extended the lead to six, 27-21, with 7:24 remaining in the third quarter.
  • The maroon and white closed the quarter on a 17-4 scoring run, propelled by senior Gabriella Aspuru and junior Cameron Corbett, who combined to score 11 of the 17 points.
  • Molloy led 38-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Aspuru opened the final quarter with a layup, extending the Lions' lead to nine, 40-31, with 8:42 left in the contest.
  • The Knights shrunk the lead down to six, 40-34, but that was as close as Molloy would allow them to come, closing the game shooting 54 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the three-point line en route to the victory.
 
Top Performances
  • Hudson scored a career-high 16 points, secured a game-high 11 rebounds, and shot 8-of-9 from the foul line.
  • Aspuru also netted 16 points while dishing out three assists.
  • Thomas tallied 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and swiped a season-high six steals.
  • Corbett recorded 12 points and shot 2-of-5 from three-point range.

The Lions travel to the nation's capital Wednesday (Feb. 2) to play the University of the District of Columbia. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
