Eaton Walk-Off Home Run Secures Softball's 12th Straight Victory

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team concluded the home portion of its 2021 regular season schedule with a sweep of the Mavericks of Mercy College. The Lions improved to 28-12 on the season and 16-6 in East Coast Conference play.

Game One: Molloy 6, Mercy 4
  • Mercy got things started early, singling on three of the first four batters to set up a sacrifice fly from Ylannah Bowman to take a 1-0 lead. A single to right field from Nicole Smart doubled the lead.
  • The Lions left the bases loaded in the home half of the inning before the Mavericks added an extra run in the second inning on a throwing error.
  • Molloy got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single up the middle from freshman Chrissie Huhn.
  • The home team took the lead for the first time in the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth after a walk to Huhn loaded the bases. Sophomore Karsyn Eaton drove in a run with a fielder's choice to come within one, 3-2, before a double to left field from senior Courtney Greene have the Lions a 4-3 lead.
  • Redshirt senior Mikaela Tribby put the maroon and white in front by three runs, 6-3, with a double to right center field headed into the final inning.
  • Bowman brought the Mavericks within two with a double with two outs but Greene forced a ground out to the remaining batter to secure her 17th win of the season. The lefty allowed three earned runs on eight hits while striking out three batters.
  • Greene went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the team. Tribby drove in two runs on a 1-for-3 afternoon.
Game Two: Molloy 10, Mercy 8
  • The Mavericks once again struck first, taking a 3-0 lead on a double to Danielle Burgos, a passed ball, and a sacrifice bunt RBI from Alexi Benson.
  • The maroon and white tied the contest in the home half of the second inning, scoring two runs on a triple from sophomore Emma Bachman before tying the game on a bunt single from sophomore Steph Conrade. 
  • A lead-off double to Huhn in the third inning set Eaton up for an RBI ground out to break the tie and put Molloy in front, 4-3. 
  • The visitors tied the score in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Alexis Crawford. 
  • A pinch hit three-run double by Alyssa Guzman and sacrifice fly from Samantha Puglia gave the Mavericks an 8-4 lead in the fifth inning.
  • Three-straight singles to open the fifth inning from Huhn, Eaton, and Greene set the table for a two-run double through the right side from Tribby to come within two, 8-6. Sophomore Grace Rende brought Molloy within one on an infield single. 
  • Molloy was down to its final out trailing by one after a single from Conrade and a walk to Huhn. Eaton sent the ball over the center field fence with a walk-off home run to give Molloy the 10-8 victory, keeping the win streak in tact at 12 games.
  • Eaton led with four RBI while Tribby and Bachman each drove in two. Huhn, Eaton, Tribby, Bachman, and Conrade each tallied multiple hits for the Lions.
  • Junior Amanda King threw 5.1 innings in the start, striking out three batters. Greene picked up win number 18 with 1.2 innings of relief, not allowing a hit while striking out one. 

Up Next
Molloy is scheduled to finish the regular season at Staten Island on Wednesday (May 5) at 3:00 p.m. With the wins today, the Lions secured the second-seed in the ECC Championship. The best-of-three semifinal series is set to begin on Friday (May 7).
