Softball Season Ends at NCAA East Regional Tournament

Manchester, N.H. - The 2021 softball season concluded today in the first day of competition at the NCAA East Regional Tournament. The fourth-seeded Lions fell to #5 New Haven and #6 Bridgeport, setting the team's record at 29-16 for the season.

Game One: #5 New Haven 3, #4 Molloy 1
  • After two scoreless innings, the Chargers took a 1-0 lead on the back of three singles. 
  • Molloy quickly responded in the home half of the inning. Freshman Chrissie Huhn singled before stealing second and scoring on a single to center field from sophomore Karsyn Eaton. 
  • UNH added two runs in the fourth inning on a lead off solo home run and an RBI single to take the 3-1 lead.
  • The maroon and white were held to just three base runners through the final three innings to end the game. 
  • Eaton drove in the lone run for the Lions with Huhn, Eaton, senior Courtney Greene, redshirt senior Mikaela Tribby, and sophomore Akemi Poyer each recording a hit. 
  • Greene fanned seven batters and allowed just two earned runs on nine hits in a complete game effort.
Game Two: #6 Bridgeport 8, #4 Molloy 7 (8 innings)
  • Facing elimination, the East Coast Conference representatives were scoreless until sophomore Grace Rende gave the Lions a 2-0 lead with a home run over the left field fence.
  • Bridgeport would come within one in the third inning, scoring one run on three singles in the top of the third before knotting the score in the top of the fourth on an RBI single.
  • The Purple Knights took its first lead of the afternoon later in the inning with a two-run double, 4-2.
  • A walk to sophomore Emma Bachman and double from Huhn put two runners in scoring position for freshman Katie Hand. The pinch hitter singled in Bachman to bring Molloy within one, 4-3, before the Lions retook the lead on a three-run home run from Greene. 
  • After a scoreless fifth inning, UB took advantage of misplays from the Molloy defense, scoring three runs on two hits and three errors to take a 7-6 lead.
  • The maroon and white knotted the score in the bottom of the sixth on a triple from junior Amanda King. 
  • Both pitchers retired the side in order in the seventh, sending Molloy and Bridgeport to extra innings for the third time this season. 
  • The Purple Knights broke the tie with an infield single to make the game 8-7. The Lions had one baserunner in the bottom half of the inning, but were unable to force the contest to continue, ending the 2021 campaign. 
  • Huhn, Greene, and King each had two hits for the maroon and white with Greene leading wit hthree RBI. 
  • Greene struck out four batters and allowed three earned runs.
