Tribby Walk-Off, King Shutout Guides Softball to Sweep of Queens

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team swept its second-straight doubleheader, topping the Knights of Queens College, 3-2 and 5-0 to improve to 20-12 on the campaign and 8-6 in East Coast Conference play.

Game One: Molloy 3, Queens 2
  • The Knights struck first, scoring on an RBI single in the second inning.
  • Molloy knotted the score in the bottom of the second inning after a lead-off walk, fielding error and wild pitch before third baseman  junior Marissa Nicoletti scored sophomore centerfielder Steph Conrade with an infield single.
  • The Lions doubled the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore catcher Akemi Poyer singled down the left field line before stealing second and being driven in on a single from sophomore left fielder Grace Rende.
  • Queens once again tied the contest in the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles.
  • The score would stand at 2-2 leading up to the bottom of the seventh inning. Sophomore designated player Emma Bachman singled before moving to third on a double down the left field line from freshman Chrissie Huhn. Redshirt senior Mikaela Tribby was called upon to pinch hit, taking the first pitch through the right side to score the game-winning run.
  • Poyer led the Lions, going 2-for-3 at the plate and adding two stolen bases while seven of Molloy's batters recorded a hit.
  • Senior pitcher Courtney Greene threw a complete game, allowing just five hits while striking out two.
Game Two: Molloy 5, Queens 0
  • Both teams left two runners on base in the second inning, but the contest would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fourth.
  • Freshman Katie Hand singled to lead off the inning before King reached on a fielder's choice. That, coupled with fielding errors from the Knights, put runners at first and third with no outs.
  • Nicoletti drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly before a fielder's choice from Rende plated King to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
  • King retired the Knights in order in the fifth inning before a single from Greene and back-to-back doubles to Hand and King put the Lions in front, 5-0.
  • King allowed just one hit in the final two innings to keep the Knights off the board, earning her first shutout of the season. In a complete game effort, the junior allowed four hits and struck out three batters.
  • Hand went 2-for-3 at the plate while Poyer and Nicoletti each picked up a stolen base in the effort.
