Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Felician to Open the Season

Lyndhurst, N.J. – The Molloy baseball team and the Felician Golden Falcons split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Lyndhurst Recreation. The Lions took the first game 15-5, before falling 11-8 in game two. Both teams moved to 1-1 on the season.

Game One: Molloy 15, Felician 5
  • The Golden Falcons jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the third.
  • Molloy responded with a 13-run fourth inning. Senior Jake McCarthy, who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored, blasted a three-run home run to right field. Seniors James Messina, Peter Theodorellis, Sean Hogan, Matt Overton, and McCarthy all walked with bases loaded to increase the Lions' lead to 8-1. Junior Chris Peralta drilled a two-RBI double to right field to make it 10-1.  Sophomore David Franchi singled to right to extend the advantage to 11-1. Redshirt junior Thomas Brady hit a sac fly, and Franchi scored an unearned run to conclude the rally.
  • Junior Patrick Hoffman hit a sac fly, and Messina scored an unearned run in the eighth to bring the score to 15-1.
  • The home team plated four runs in the ninth to make it 15-5.
  • Redshirt senior Timothy Panetta threw six innings gave up one run on three hits and struck out seven batters to improve to 1-0 on the season.
  • Senior Ryan Karp pitched two scoreless innings and fanned three batters.
Game Two: Felician 11, Molloy 8
  • The maroon and white went ahead 2-0 in the first on a two-RBI triple from Hogan. Overton grounded out, which allowed Hogan to score, and made it 3-0.
  • The Golden Falcons knotted the score in the bottom of the third.
  • Hogan, who went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and one run scored, scored Theodorellis on a ground out to short to put Molloy up 4-3.
  • Messina, who tallied three hits, two runs scored, and one RBI, hit an RBI single, and Hogan added a two-RBI triple to extend the advantage to 7-3 in the top of the fourth.
  • Felician responded with three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a 10-7 lead.
  • Messina scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to cut the lead to 10-8.
  • The home team added a run in the bottom half of the sixth.

  • Molloy and Felician conclude its three-game series Tuesday, March 9. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Mitchel Field.
