Rockville Centre, NY – The Molloy women's basketball team topped the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, 47-39, Sunday afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium. The Lions improved to 3-2 overall and in ECC play, while the Spartans fell to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in league play.

How it happened

• The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a three-pointer from senior Gabriella Aspuru and a layup from graduate student Safiyyah Lee.
• STAC ended the frame on an 8-0 run and led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter.
• Molloy, which did not allow the Spartans to make a field goal in the second stanza, outscored the away team 10-1 in the second and took a 15-9 advantage into the break.
• Ahead 17-16, the home team ended the third quarter on a 15-3 rally, sparked by four points from Aspuru and three points each from junior Katie Marquardt and freshman Trinity Hudson, and led 32-19 after 30 minutes of play.
• Lee made a layup to extend the lead to 36-20 with 6:12 left en route to a 47-39 win.

Top Performances

• Lee tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
• Aspuru netted nine points, and Marquardt added seven points.
• The Lions, who are second in the nation in scoring defense and field-goal percentage defense, held the Spartans to 13-59 shooting (22.0%).
