Seaford, N.Y. – The field hockey team fell to the Southern Connecticut State Owls, 3-1, this afternoon at Cedar Creek Park. The loss drops the Lions to 0-16 (0-13 NE10), while the Owls conclude the year 3-14 (3-11 NE10).
How it Happened
- The road team tallied the first goal of the game when Brianna Caffery found the back of the net 3:28 into the opening stanza.
- The Lions offense threatened minutes later as junior Erin Tudryn put a shot on net off of a penalty corner, but was denied by goalkeeper Janelle Ward
- 34 seconds later, freshman Kassandra Sakhat took a shot from straight away, but again Ward made a save to keep the Lions off the scoreboard.
- The second quarter was dominated by defense and goaltending. Freshman Kelsey Price made two key saves to keep the Owls' lead at one going into the half.
- The Owls took a two-goal lead in the third quarter, scoring with 7:34 remaining.
- A minute later, the maroon and white would answer. On a two-on-one advantage, junior Lizzie Weiner found freshman Alexa Denis who buried her first career goal to cut the lead in half.
- Molloy looked to tie the game seconds later, as juniors Carly Malico and Erin Tudryn put consecutive shots on goal, followed up by Denis, but they were all batted away by the Owls' goalkeeper.
- The away team netted its third goal of the game with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Top Performances
- Weiner collected her first assist of the season.
- Denis and Tudryn tied a team-high with two shots on goal.
- In net, Price made 14 saves.
