Cary, NC – The Molloy baseball team defeated the New Haven Chargers, 10-3, Sunday in the DII Challenge Against Cancer at the USA Baseball Training Complex. The Lions improved to 7-4, while the Chargers moved to 4-4.

How it Happened

• New Haven scored one run in the second and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead.
• In the bottom of the fifth, the Lions plated nine runs to go up 9-2. Sophomore Patrick Hoffman hit an RBI double down the right field line to make it 2-1. Junior Peter Theodorellis hit an RBI single to knot the score at two. Senior James Messina scored on an error, and junior Jake McCarthy walked with the bases full to increase the lead to 4-2. Later in the frame, senior Jake Saltzman hit an RBI single, and Hoffman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Messina concluded the rally with a three-run triple to left field.
• Saltzman hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored junior Matt Overton to extend the advantage to 10-2.

Top Performances

• Messina drove in three runs, tallied two hits, and scored one run.
• Saltzman and Hoffman tallied two RBIs each.
• Theodorellis extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
• Junior Billy Wildeman threw seven innings, gave up three runs, and struck out seven batters to improve to 2-0 on the season.
