Baseball Tallies 21 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep Over Dominican

Uniondale, N.Y. – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Dominican Chargers Sunday at Mitchel Field. The Lions improved to 4-2, while the Chargers fell to 0-6.

Game One: Molloy 10, Dominican 9
  • Dominican took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • After three straight walks, redshirt sophomore Thomas Brady was hit by a pitch to knot the score at one in the bottom at the first.
  • The Chargers plated four runs in the fourth to go ahead 5-1.
  • Junior Jake McCarthy, who recorded two hits and drove in one run, hit an RBI in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2.
  • In the seventh, junior Matt Overton, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs,  hit a two-RBI double to center field, and junior Chris Peralta hit an RBI single to center to put the maroon and white up 6-5.
  • With the score 7-7 in the eighth, senior Sean Hogan singled to center, which drove junior Peter Theodorellis, who tallied two runs and scored four runs,  and Overton hit an RBI single to increase the Lions' lead to 9-7.
  • The away team tied the game with two runs in the ninth.
  • Sophomore Patrick Willix hit an RBI single down the left field line leading Molloy to a 10-9 win.
Game Two: Molloy 11, Dominican 
  • After the Chargers plated one run in the top of the first, the Lions scored four runs to take a 4-1 advantage. Theodorellis grounded out to score senior James Messina, and Overton scored on a wild pitch. Senior Jake Saltzman, who was 2-for-2 with two RBIs,  concluded the frame with a two-run double down the right field line.
  • Molloy used a four-run second inning to make it 8-1. Hogan, who recorded two hits, three RBIs, and two scored runs, blasted a two-run triple to right center. Peralta hit an RBI single through the right side and came around to score on a throwing error.
  • Dominican scored four runs in the third to cut the home team's lead to 8-5.
  • Senior Michael Nacinovich drove in McCarthy with an RBI double to right field.
  • Hogan and McCarthy tallied RBIs in the fifth to extend the lead to 11-5.
  • Senior Anthony Vano threw 4.1 inning, gave up one run, and struck out five batters to improve to 1-0 on the season.
