Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The softball team stepped out of league play to face off against one of the top teams in the region in Caldwell University. Molloy fell to 16-27 on the season with the losses.
Game 1: Caldwell 6, Molloy 3
- The Lions got on the board in the second inning, scoring first on a single down the line by redshirt sophomore Mikaela Tribby before adding two runs with a single from senior Tara Byrnes.
- Caldwell plated a run in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to two runs, 3-1.
- In the top of the sixth, the Cougars took advantage of defensive mistakes from Molloy to take a 4-3 lead.
- Another error allowed an insurance run to cross the plate in the seventh inning before an RBI double rounded out the score at 6-3.
- Freshmen Marissa Nicoletti and Amanda King as well as sophomore Courtney Greene joined Byrnes and Tribby with hits on the afternoon, with Nicoletti adding a stolen base.
- King tossed a complete game, striking out four.Â
Game 2: Caldwell 5, Molloy 2
- The visitors took a 1-0 lead after two innings following a double from Jessica Johnston.Â
- A two-run home run from Maya Rodriguez set the score at 3-0.Â
- A second RBI double from Johnston set the score at 4-0 in the fourth before the third baseman stole home for the Cougars' fifth run.
- The Lions got the team's first hit of the contest on a single from King in the fifth inning, but were unable to plate a run until the bottom of the seventh.Â
- Senior Kaitlyn Snyder led off the inning with a solo home run. A fielder's choice scored Greene to bring Molloy within three, 5-2, but the home team was unable to overcome the deficit.Â
- Snyder, King, and Greene recorded the lone hits for the Lions.
- Senior Jenna Turato struck out two through five innings in the loss. Greene added two strikeouts in two innings of relief.Â
Looking Ahead
The maroon and white will honor its seniors on Saturday (Apr. 20) prior to a doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport at 12:00 p.m.
