Softball Falls in Extra Innings in ECC Tournament

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (May 2, 2018) - Freshman Courtney Greene drove in a team-high two runs in an extra inning 4-3 loss to Mercy College in the opening game of the East Coast Conference Tournament. The third-seeded Lions (27-24) fall into the losers' bracket and will face the fourth-seeded University of Bridgeport on Friday at 12:30 p.m. on the campus of LIU Post.

Molloy took a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Junior Kaitlyn Snyder led off the contest with a single to left field, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Olivia Banulski. Greene drove in her first run of the afternoon with a single to right center field to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. The freshman scored on an RBI single from senior Chrissy Heyer to double the lead.

Greene added another run for the maroon and white in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run over the right field fence.

The Mavericks knotted the score in the sixth inning on a three-run home run from sophomore Destini Bullock.

In the top of the seventh, Molloy had runners on second and third following a single from Banulski and a double from senior Brianna Dalton, but back-to-back strikeouts stranded the runners. Mercy stranded two runners in the home half of the inning, forcing extra innings.

The Mavericks loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but junior Jenna Turato forced a pop out to extend the contest to the ninth.

A combined nine ten batters were retired in order, until Bullock reached with a single through the left side. The home team ended the contest with a walk-off single by Mikayla Newham.

Turato struck out five batters in 8.1 innings of work. Greene went 2-for-5 for the maroon and white.
