Flushing, N.Y. (Mar. 31, 2018) – The Molloy baseball team swept a doubleheader with the Queens College Knights Saturday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium. The Lions won the first game 3-1 and the second game 5-2. The maroon and white improved to 14-12 overall and 7-0 in ECC play with the wins.
Game One: Molloy 3, Queens 1
Senior
Jack McCarty collected three hits and an RBI, and sophomore
Sean Hogan tallied three hits in the first game.
Queens (9-13, 1-6 ECC) opened the scoring in the second inning and took a 1-0 lead.
Molloy plated three runs in the seventh to go ahead. Sophomore
James Messina grounded into a fielder's choice, which scored freshman
Michael Nacinovich. McCarty hit an RBI single to left field to put the Lions up 2-1. Senior
Elijah Leerdam capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to right, which scored Messina and made it 3-1.
Senior
Kevin Hiss threw eight innings, gave up one run on four hits, and struck out nine to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Junior
Lucas Burton struck out one batter and recorded his third save of the year.
Game Two: Molloy 5, Queens 2
Sophomore
Jake Saltzman led the Lions with two hits and two RBIs in the second game.
Messina put Molloy ahead, 1-0, in the second with an RBI single through the right side.
The maroon and white added two more runs in the third. Senior
Angelo Navetta grounded to first and reached on a fielding error, which brought in Saltzman. Then, Leerdam reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Navetta to score and increased the lead to 3-0.
Queens scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2.
Saltzman hit a two-RBI single to left field in the fourth to extend the Lions' advantage to 5-2.
Redshirt sophomore
Timothy Panetta pitched two shutout innings in relief to move to 2-2 on the season.
Senior
Shawn Klotsche recorded the final four outs to register his fourth save of the season.
Molloy closes its series with Queens Monday, Apr. 2. First pitch at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
