ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2017) – The Molloy softball team fell in a doubleheader with the Mavericks of Mercy College.
Game One: Molloy 1, Mercy 9 (Five Innings)
The Lions first fell in five innings, 9-1. Sophomore pitcher
Jenna Turato (Garden City South, N.Y.) went 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts, while junior
Makayla Harris (Berlin, Conn.) pitched 1.1 innings, surrendering four runs on four hits with one strikeout.
The Mavericks struck first, as Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn.) hit a three-run home run in the third inning. Mercy added two more in the fourth, as Lloyd hit a sacrifice fly to score a run before Julie Gross (Port Monmouth, N.J.) doubled in a run.
The Lions got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth. Senior
Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) doubled to left center and was brought home on a single from junior
Tiana DeOliveira (Mastic, N.Y.). In the top of the fifth, Mercy added four runs on a single from Destini Bullock (San Diego, Calif.) and a three-run home run from Kendall Meeks (Guysville, Ohio).
Facing the mercy rule, senior
Erin Clinton (Long Beach, N.Y.) led off with a single up the middle. The maroon and white were unable to bring her home, and fell after five innings.
Game Two: Molloy 3, Mercy 7
Through the first two innings, the Lions trailed 2-0 on a fielder's choice from Gross and an RBI single from Allie Pellizzaro (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada). The Mavericks added two runs in the top of the fourth on a Pellizzaro single and a double from Skania Lemus (Chula Vista, Calif.).
DeOliveira doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth inning to score graduate student
Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.).
The Mavericks increased their lead in the top of the seventh inning, going ahead 7-1 following home runs from Cassidy Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y.) and Bullock.
In the home half of the inning, Fedor drew a leadoff walk, advancing to third following a ground rule double from Botte. The senior scored on a single from junior
Sarah Rambo (Eagleville, Pa.) to bring Molloy within five. Botte scored on a ground out from Clinton to set the score at 7-3, but the Lions were retired to end the contest.
Botte and DeOliveira each went 3-for-4 with two doubles on the day.
The maroon and white are scheduled to face the University of New Haven at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday (Apr. 6) at Bob Klein Field.
