MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Mar. 15, 2017) – The Molloy softball team concluded their trip to Florida with a doubleheader against Barry University. In both contests, the two teams were neck-and-neck until the late innings, but ultimately the Lions fell in both games.
Game One: Molloy 2, Barry 6
The Lions and the Buccaneers found themselves in a pitchers' duel in the early innings, with the teams combining for only three hits through the first three innings. Barry was able to break the stand-still first as senior Jasmine Harris (Miami, Fla.) doubled to centerfield for the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Molloy answered in the top of the fifth, as
Sarah Rambo (Eagleville, Pa.) reached on an error to start the inning. Junior
Makayla Harris (Berlin, Conn.) singled up the middle to move Rambo into scoring position before
Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) drew a walk to load the bases. The game was tied on a fielder's choice from junior
Olivia Banulski (Bristol, Conn.) to score Harris. The maroon and white would go up 2-1 in the next at bat, as graduate student
Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.) reached on an error to score Fedor.
In the bottom half of the inning, Barry knotted the score 2-2 on an RBI single from senior Cheyanne Head (Surrey, British Columbia). A double from sophomore Lynsey Duncan (Gilbert, Ariz.) later in the inning put the Buccaneers up 4-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Barry took advantage of miscues in the Lions' defense, putting up two more runs on fielding errors to win 6-2.
Senior
Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) pitched six innings, giving up 10 hits and striking out two batters in the loss. Fedor went 2-for-2 with a walk for the Lions.
Game Two: Molloy 1, Barry 2
In the second contest, Molloy struck first on an RBI single by freshman
Mikaela Tribby (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the top of the third inning. The game would remain scoreless through the bottom of the fifth, with sophomore pitcher
Jenna Turato (Garden City South, N.Y.) holding the Buccaneers to only four hits through the first four innings. In the fifth, though, Barry tied the contest on an RBI single from junior Alayna Gallagher (Safety Harbor, Fla.).
The next three half innings saw batters on both teams go down in order, the score still stuck at 1-1 headed into the bottom of the seventh. The Buccaneers opened the inning with a single from sophomore Anieliese Palmeiro (Doral, Fla.), who stole second in the following at bat. The sophomore moved to third on a single from Head before Gallagher drove home the game-winning run in the next at bat to win the game 2-1.
Through 6.1 innings, Turato struck out three batters and gave up nine hits. Tribby and junior
Tiana Deoliveira (Mastic, N.Y.) registered the lone hits for the maroon and white.
