Second Half Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball in Sweet Sixteen

GARDEN CITY SOUTH, N.Y. (Mar. 13, 2017) – The #5 Molloy women's basketball team concluded their season, falling in the Sweet Sixteen to the #2 Knights of Queens College, 70-60. The Lions, 24-9, had the most successful season in program history. Senior Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) led the team with 23 points, three assists, two steals and one block while Symone Kelly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) totaled 14 points, five boards and one block.

The score was tied twice in the opening quarter, 6-6 and 8-8, until Queens closed the opening frame with back-to-back field goals from Kaitlyn Mahon (Middle Village, N.Y.) and Madison Rowland (Albany, N.Y.) to go ahead 12-8. In the second, the Knights went up by as much as 22-9. The Lions battled back with a run of their own, as a jumper from Kelly and Maggie Salomone (Narragansett, R.I.)  cut the lead to 22-18. Madison Rowland ended the half with three straight baskets to send the teams to the locker room with Queens leading 30-20.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, a pair of foul shots from Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.) brought the maroon and white within six, 32-26. From there, however, the Knights extended to a 16-8 run to go ahead by 14, their largest of the contest. Senior Shantana Kanhoye (South Richmond Hill, N.Y.) ended the third frame with five straight points to take Molloy within 11, sending the teams into the final 10 minutes with Queens ahead 52-41.

McDonald continued the momentum, scoring six of the team's next 10 points to bring the Lions within eight, 59-51. A jumper from Kanhoye paired with two foul shots from Kelly took the score to 63-58 with 90 seconds on the clock, but a 7-2 run by Queens sealed the NCAA East Regional Championship for the Knights.

The maroon and white shot 92.9 percent from the foul line, but were held to 36.7 percent from the field. The Knights also maintained an advantage under the glass, out-rebounding Molloy 50-30, providing 21 second chance points as compared to the Lions' four.

At the conclusion of the contest, McDonald was named to the All-Tournament team.
