Women's Soccer Defeated in Opening Round of ECC Tournament

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2017) – The No. 3 Molloy women's soccer team fell to the No. 2 Mercy Mavericks, 1-0, in the first round of the East Coast Conference Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field. The Lions finished the season 8-8-2. The match was the maroon and white's first in the postseason since the 2011 season.

The Mavericks (15-3), who outshot Molloy 7-4 in the first half, created the first chances of the match. The Lions answered with two shots from freshman Dana Poetzsch (Hicksville, N.Y.), who led the team with three shots, and a break from senior Samantha Mendes (Mineola, N.Y.). Freshman keeper Jackie Carty (East Islip, N.Y.) made three of her seven stops in the opening stanza. Despite the opportunities, the contest was scoreless at the break.

Mercy broke the tie in the 50th minute on a goal from Heidi Serna. Down a goal, the maroon and white generated chances to knot the score. In the 80th minute, sophomore Amy D'Eloia (East Northport, N.Y.) fired a shot just over the crossbar, and in the 90th minute, senior Katlyn Merino (Mineola, N.Y.) was denied by Melissa Torres, who made seven saves.
