Women's Soccer Blistered By 28 Shots, Three Stonehill Goals in 3-0 Loss

EASTON, Mass. (Sept. 8, 2016) - The barrage of shots began early and lasted for 90 whole minutes as the Molloy College women's soccer team locked horns with the Stonehill College Skyhawks on Thursday (Sept. 8) afternoon. Unfortunately for the Lions, the hosts proved to have too much firepower as the Skyhawks claimed a 3-0 victory over Molloy at Skyhawk Field; the loss drops Molloy to 0-3-1 on the season while Stonehill remains unbeaten at 3-0.

The Lions took the first five shots of the game with efforts by Jessica Malone (Long Beach, N.Y.)Kristen Cummings (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Dominique Capolongo (Islip, N.Y.) going wide of the net. An attempt in the eighth minute by Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.) was cleared off the line and a rebound effort from freshman Samantha Mendes (Mineola, N.Y.) would be blocked in front. After the first five attempts, Stonehill took command of the ball and peppered Molloy keeper Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.) with a continuous volley of shots; Wilson, however, was up to the task in making six saves. The hosts eventually got on the board thanks to a foul in the 18-yard box in the 43rd minute, and junior Meredith Moore (Salem, Conn.) scored on the penalty kick to give the Skyhawks a lead they would not relinquish.

Stonehill would continue to pour on the offense in the second half, outshooting the Lions by a 14-2 margin. Freshman midfielder Nicole Geraghty (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored a second-half brace to put the game away with goals in the 61st and 82nd minute of action.

Despite the loss, Wilson acquitted herself well with a 13-save performance. The sophomore's numbers were one off the program record held by Melissa McCarthy back in 2005. Senior defender Courtney Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.) had a team-high two shots for her squad, as Molloy was outshot 28-10 in the match.

The Lions will host Holy Family University on Wednesday (Sept. 14) at 4 p.m. at RVC Sports Complex.
