Women's Soccer Loses Rain-Soaked 2-0 Decision To Roberts Wesleyan Friday

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2016) - A header in the tenth minute by Orla Martin (Mahopac, N.Y.) set a downward tone into motion as the Molloy College women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision in the rain to Roberts Wesleyan College on Friday (Sept. 30). The win for the Redhawks at RVC Sports Complex improves the team record to 5-3-1 overall and 2-1 in East Coast Conference play; the loss means that Molloy is now 2-5-1 overall and 1-1 in conference competition.

Martin connected on her third goal of the season off of a corner kick from freshman Sarah Glancurslo (Macedon, N.Y.), as the flick-on beat Lions keeper Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.). That was the only offense of the first half, as the visitors outshot Molloy by an 8-5 margin. In the second half, the maroon and white put forward a hard-fought charge as the Redhawks settled back into defensive mode. However, each attempt for the Lions was stonewalled by freshman goalie Kelsey Brinkel (Rochester, N.Y.), who finished the game with eight saves total. Roberts Wesleyan scored the dealbreaker in the 82nd minute off a nifty attempt from Taylor Rutland (Kent, N.Y.) from upwards of 25 yards out. The kick curled into the top right corner of the net past the reach of Wilson to cement a victory for the Redhawks.

Senior forward Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.) was held off the scoresheet despite six shots and five shots on target in the contest. Sophomore Katlyn Merino (Corona, N.Y.) and senior Courtney Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.) each attempted two shots as well. Wilson collected five saves in the losing effort.

Molloy continues conference play on Sunday (Oct. 2) as the Lions face Daemen College in a 12 p.m. showcase at RVC Sports Complex.
