ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2016) – Despite firing eleven shots, Molloy's women's soccer team was unable to overcome the Rams of Philadelphia University, dropping a 2-1 contest on Tuesday (Sept. 20) at RVC Sports Complex.
The Lions roared out of the gate as
Samantha Mendes (Mineola, N.Y.) sent a shot into the arms of keeper Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa.) only 34 seconds into the contest. The pressure brought by the Molloy offense would eventually cause a crack in the armor to the detriment of the visitors. In an attempt to pass the ball back to her keeper for a clear, Rams back Katie Neveil (Philadelphia, Pa.) sent the ball just a bit too hard and into her own net to put the Lions up 1-0 in the 24
th minute. The maroon and white, capitalizing on the momentum, continued to shoot, though none of the attempts were successful. As the first half winded down to its final minutes, Neveil crossed the ball to senior midfielder Marissa Morazes (Milford, Conn.), whose shot soared past Molloy net-minder
Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.) and into the top right corner of the net.
The maroon and white continued to look for scoring chances, firing four shots at the senior keeper in the second half. The score remained tied at one until freshman midfielder Alexa Karakitsios (Sicklerville, N.J.) sent a shot flying into the net off a free kick in the 81
st minute of play to put the Rams up 2-1. The Lions worked to get the ball up the field, but were unable to overcome the one goal deficit. Leading the offensive efforts for the maroon and white were Mendes,
Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.), and
Amanda Milazzo (Setauket, N.Y.), who each registered three shots on the night.
The Rams improve to 2-3-1 on the year, while Molloy falls to 1-4-1. The Lions return to action on Saturday (Sept. 24) as they begin East Coast Conference play on the road at New York Institute of Technology at 12 p.m.
