Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Merrimack, 2-0

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Sept. 2, 2016) - The Molloy College women's soccer team mustered only one shot attempt on net and watched Merrimack junior Victoria Carter (Smithfield, R.I.) have a fantastic evening as the Warriors claimed a 2-0 win on Friday (Sept. 2) at the Merrimack Kickoff Classic in North Andover.

The hosts already had a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half as Carter fed Sarah Boucher (Northbridge, Mass.) for a wide open opportunity at the Molloy net; Boucher beat Molloy netminder Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.) to give Merrimack a one-goal edge in the 21st minute of action. The Lions' lone shot came in the 48th minute as sophomore Katlyn Merino (Corona, N.Y.) tested Merrimack keeper Molly Meehan (Fairfield, Conn.) to no avail. To add insult to injury, Carter provided an insurance marker just two minutes later on a counterattack thanks to the speed of teammate Andrea Rego (Dartmouth, Mass.). Wilson did come back in the next minute to stone Boucher on a penalty kick attempt, one of five saves for the sophomore in her first collegiate match in net.

Sophomore Allie Rainey (Smithtown, N.Y.) led Molloy with three shots in total, but the Lions collected just seven total shots against a stifling Merrimack defense. Both sides were able to create offensive chances with a combined 17 corner kicks between the two sides; the Warriors held a 10-7 edge in that category.

Molloy will play on Sunday (Sept. 4) at Martone-Mejail Field against Bentley University at 3 p.m. to close out the Merrimack Kickoff Classic.
