No. 13 Men's Lacrosse Clipped By No. 12 Mercy, 9-6

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2016) - The No. 13 Molloy College men's lacrosse team used a third-quarter rally to tie up its contest with twelfth-ranked Mercy on Saturday (Apr. 9), but the Mavericks pulled away in the final 15 minutes to capture a 9-6 win over the Lions at John A. Darcy Field.

Molloy (7-4, 1-3 ECC) struggled out of the gate as Mavs midfielder Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y.) scored the game's first goal just 74 seconds into the contest. The maroon and white answered quickly behind a marker from senior attacker Kevin Teresky (South Huntington, N.Y.) with five minutes to play, but Mercy rattled off four unanswered tallies over the next twenty minutes to silence the home side and take a 5-1 lead into the halftime break. Freshman attacker Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y.) had two goals in the rally while Wilcox and Ryan McSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) each scored a marker as the Mavericks held the Lions scoreless thanks to the effort of senior netminder A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y.), who made six saves in the opening half of action.

The Lions finally found a gear that worked in the third quarter, much to the dismay of Mercy goalie Michael Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y.) who had replaced Pellati to start the second half. Senior midfielder Austin Valenti (Baldwin, N.Y.) scored with 9:45 to play in the quarter before Teresky and Casey Kelly (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) added tallies to bring the maroon and white within one. Teresky's third goal of the contest ended up tying the score at five-all and sending a jolt of energy into the rain-soaked crowd at Darcy Field with six minutes to go in the frame. Chance after chance ended up being snuffed out, however, and the Mavs took a 6-5 lead to the fourth quarter after McSpadyen registered his second tally with less than 30 seconds to play. In the fourth quarter, a breakdown ensued as Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y.) took advantage of a favorable transition to beat goalie Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) and give Mercy a 7-5 lead; Teresky bagged his fourth goal of the contest with less than seven-and-a-half to play in regulation as Molloy trailed by one. The Lions only took two shots in the next five-plus minutes as Mercy played keepaway effectively and ultimately the Mavs got markers from Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y.) and Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y.) in the final 120 seconds of competition to earn the three-goal victory.

On defense, senior Dan Grebe (Farmingville, N.Y.) had a team-high four ground ball pickups while freshman long-stick defender Mike Durkin (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had three ground balls. Teresky caused a team-high three turnovers, Toomey made 10 saves in cage and junior midfielder Frank Sciulla (Rocky Point, N.Y.) won 9-of-19 on face-offs.

Molloy will host Dominican Collge (N.Y.) on Wednesday (Apr. 13) at 7 p.m. on Multiple Myeloma Awareness Day at Darcy Field.
