Markowitz Scores Six As Women's Lacrosse Downs STAC in Rain, 13-5

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2016) - A six-goal effort from sophomore attacker Jessica Markowitz (Baldwin, N.Y.) was enough for the Molloy College women's lacrosse team and more than the entire Saint Thomas Aquinas scoring ledger as the Lions won a critical ECC tilt with the Spartans, 13-5, on Saturday (Apr. 9) at John A. Darcy Field. With the win, Molloy improves to 8-4 on the year and 3-1 in East Coast Conference competition while STAC falls to 8-5 and 3-1 in ECC play.

Markowitz tallied the first goal of the game with 69 seconds gone in the contest as the rain started to fall in Rockville Centre. Senior Katie O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) was credited with the assist on the first goal and also fed Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.) for the Lions' second marker with just over six minutes played in the first half. The visitors got on the board thanks to freshman midfielder Marist Parr (Red Hook, N.Y.) just three minutes later; Parr and Markowitz actually traded four goals in a row as Molloy led 4-2 with 12:36 to play in the opening frame. After a goal by Alyson Brennan (Hicksville, N.Y.) brought the Spartans within one at 4-3 with eight-and-a-half minutes to play, Wilson and junior Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) scored to put Molloy ahead by a 6-3 margin at the end of the first half.

Markowitz opened the second half with two consecutive markers, including a woman-up goal, as the Lions' advantage increased to five goals with 26 minutes to play in the game. The Lions scored seven goals in total in the second half, with Sesselman and Wilson getting their hat tricks and O'Brien scoring a goal as well. Red-shirt junior goalie Caroline Winters (Baldwin, N.Y.) made eight saves in net to earn her eighth victory while junior defender Gabrielle Batista (Hicksville, N.Y.) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers in the winnning effort.

Molloy will host Queens College next Saturday (Apr. 16) at 12 p.m. at Darcy Field in a game that will benefit the Ranger Lead the Way Fund and help support disabled military veterans.
