Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 8, 2016) - The Molloy College baseball team crushed 19 base hits en route to a 13-1 blowout of Bridgeport on Friday (Apr. 8) in the first game of an East Coast Conference doubleheader at Mitchel Field; the Purple Knights exacted revenge over the Lions with an 8-3 win in the second game of the day. With the split, Molloy now stands at 19-8 overall and 4-2 in ECC play while Bridgeport is 14-9-1 and 7-3 in conference competition.

Game One: Molloy 13, Bridgeport 1
The maroon and white got to UB starting pitcher Dakota Edwards (Turlock, Calif.) early in the contest. In the bottom of the first inning, senior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) drew a walk and then stole second base. Junior centerfielder Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) laced a ball into the left-center field gap and trucked his way into third base with an RBI triple to put the Lions on the board. Junior third baseman Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) then smacked a single past the diving Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.) and into center field to give the maroon and white a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. Podell kickstarted a one-out rally in the bottom of the third by hitting a single back to the pitcher; sophomore Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) then placed a single through the left side of the infield to get another runner on base. Following an Edwards wild pitch, second baseman Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) blooped a single to left field scoring both runs for a 4-0 advantage.

Edwards was knocked out in the fifth inning after just two batters. Podell started the frame with a single and took two extra bases on an error by Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.), then the junior scored on a wild pitch. Navetta drove a ball to left-center field that cleared the fence after it was dropped by Isaiah Rivera (Newington, Conn.). After Ray Kreiger (Derby, Conn.) came on in relief, the Lions loaded the bases for sophomore Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.), who drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Guzman singled home another run and Alberghina doubled in two more to take a 10-0 lead. In the next inning, Rahn struck for an RBI double and then scored on a wild pitch while Guzman drove in another run with an infield single to put the maroon and white up by 13 runs and into cruise control.

Junior starter Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) improved his record to 5-0 with seven shutout innings of two-hit ball, striking out four batters in the victory. Senior Peter Vath (Selden, N.Y.) and freshman Ryan Doerschug (Commack, N.Y.) each pitched an inning of relief, with UB getting an unearned run in the ninth inning to prevent the shutout. Podell, Navetta and Alberghina each had three hits in the win as all nine starters had a hit for the Lions in the win. Rahn and Alberghina each drove in three runs.

Game Two: Bridgeport 8, Molloy 3
The second game proved to be a pitcher's duel between Molloy starter Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) and Bridgeport's Rob Anderson (Straford, Conn.). Both pitchers handled the tasks through the first four innings, when UB scratched a run across in the fifth on an error. In the sixth, Rahn golfed a single into left field to drive home Podell and tie the score at one-all. Bridgeport managed to tatter the Molloy bullpen in the eighth and ninth innings for seven runs (five in the eighth and two in the ninth) as Tyler Theiss (Deer Park, N.Y.) drove in three runs with two triples in the late frames. Navetta had three hits and Podell rapped two base hits in the loss; freshman Timothy Panetta (Broad Channel, N.Y.) took the loss in relief, surrendering three runs in the eighth inning.

The Molloy-Bridgeport series will continue Sunday (Apr. 10) in Connecticut as the Purple Knights host two games at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
