Softball Snaps Skid, Sweeps Dowling Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHIRLEY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2016) – On Saturday (Apr. 23), the Molloy College softball team snapped a seven-game losing skid and picked up two victories at Dowling College in East Coast Conference action. The Lions won the first game by a 5-1 score before taking the second game of the day by a final margin of 7-3.

Game One: Molloy 5, Dowling 1
The maroon and white came out strong and were able to put a stop to the seven-game losing streak. The Lions started the first inning with four runs, automatically putting them on top. A single by junior catcher Milan Botte (Reston, Va.) scored Olivia Banulski (Bristol, Conn.) to give the Lions a 1-0 lead; An RBI Double from sophomore catcher Alexandra Russo (Coram, N.Y.) scored Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) and Botte for the 3-0 lead. Junior third basemen Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) then hit a run-scoring single that plated Brianna Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) to end the inning with a 4-0 Molloy lead against Dowling. Junior pitcher Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) was able to hold the Golden Lions scoreless through six innings in picking up the victory. Dalton went on base by a hit-by-pitch in the top of the seventh and was able to score off of an RBI single hit to the left side by Fedor. Balinskas, Botte and Fedor each had two hits for Molloy in the win while Hawks tossed a complete-game five-hitter and struck out four Golden Lions.

Game Two: Molloy 7, Dowling 3
The Lions started the contest on top by scoring three runs within the first inning. Russo hit an RBI single down the left field line sending Olivia Banulski (Bristol, Conn.) home to start the contest with a 1-0 lead. Then, Sarah Rambo (Eagleville, Pa.) tripled to right field resulting in 2 RBI's that scored Russo and Botte. For Dowling, sophomore Tiana Deoliveira (Mastic, N.Y.) singled through the right side resulting in an RBI as senior Victoria Gallagher (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to two runs. Molloy exploded for three more runs in the top of the fourth as Banulski reached on an error with Fedor scampering home; Botte singled in Banulski and Dalton hit an RBI single as well. Both Jenna Turato (Garden City South, N.Y.) and Samantha Sauer (Plainview, N.Y.) pitched three innings in limiting Dowling to only three runs in the contest. Hawks came on in the seventh and closed the door on the Golden Lions to capture the doubleheader sweep. Russo, Rambo and Fedor (the 5-6-7 hitters) combined to go 6-for-12 with two extra-base hits and four RBIs in the win.
Molloy will conclude the regular season with a Sunday (Apr. 24) doubleheader against Saint Thomas Aquinas College at Bob Klein Field, beginning at 12 p.m.
