Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2016) - Buoyed by a six-run first inning and seven solid frames of pitching from junior
Kevin Hiss (Merrick, N.Y.), the Molloy College baseball team took a 7-1 decision on Sunday (Apr. 24) at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. The Lions completed a series victory, taking three of four from the Mavericks and moving to 26-13 overall and 10-6 in East Coast Conference play. Mercy, meanwhile, dropped to 11-23 in the 2016 season with a 4-12 mark in conference competition.
Hiss tossed seven innings of four-hit ball, yielding just one unearned run while walking two batters and striking out one Maverick in his first ECC start. Relievers
Matt Castaneda (East Meadow, N.Y.) and
Shawn Klotsche (Wantagh, N.Y.) each threw a scoreless inning to seal the series win for the maroon and white. Meanwhile the offense jumped on Mavs starter Kenny Costa (Byram, N.J.) in the first inning to grab an insurmountable lead. After the first two batters in the inning---
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) and
Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.)---reached to open the contest, junior third baseman
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) laid down a perfect bunt and reached first base with a single. Costa's throw over to first was errant, allowing Guzman to score on the play with the game's first run.
On the very next pitch, sophomore first baseman
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) cracked a single to left-center field to bring home Alberghina and Podell and put the Lions ahead by three runs. After a one-out single by
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.), Molloy took a four-run lead thanks to a ground-rule double by
Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.); the Lions' lead was upped to six thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and an RBI double down the right field line from sophomore catcher
Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.).
The maroon and white pounded 14 hits with five players (Guzman, Podell, Rahn, Galanoudis and McCarty) each having two-hit games. Molloy will venture out-of-conference on Wednesday (Apr. 27) when the Lions take on Felician University in a regional matchup in Lyndhurst, N.J. at 7 p.m.
