Baseball Wins Series Opener With Mercy, 5-2, On Friday

Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2016) – A five-run first inning lifted the Molloy College baseball team to a vital 5-2 victory over the Mercy College Mavericks in game one of a four-game East Coast Conference series on Friday (Apr. 22) in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.

Molloy (24-12, 8-5 ECC) jumped on Mavericks starter Matt Snyder (Albany, N.Y.) in the game's opening pitches. After Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on a double and Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error, Navetta smacked the first pitch from the Kentucky transfer down the right field line to score both runs and put the Lions ahead early in the contest. With two outs, junior Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) hit a single up the middle to score Navetta and give Molloy a three-run lead. The very next batter was senior outfielder Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) and he clobbered a 1-2 pitch out of the yard and over the left-field fence. That gave the maroon and white all the offense they would need versus Mercy (10-21, 3-10 ECC).

Sophomore Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) took to the mound in the bottom of the first inning and had a 5-0 lead without even throwing a pitch. The Lions' starter went the distance, surrendering seven hits and two runs while striking out two batters to pick up the win. Catinella yielded just one run in both the second and fifth innings to Mavs' sophomore catcher Nick Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.). Daley went 1-for-2 with an RBI single and a run-scoring groundout in the contest for Mercy's offensive output. Meanwhile, Podell and Murphy each had two hits against Snyder while the Lions as a team knocked eight balls through safely for base hits in the victory.

The series between the Lions and Mavericks continues on Saturday (Apr. 23) at Mitchel Field in a 12 p.m. start.
