(Apr. 20, 2016) – Junior starting pitcher Kevin Hiss (Merrick, N.Y.) opened with four no-hit innings as the Molloy College baseball team peppered Post University in a non-conference game on Wednesday (Apr. 20) at Mitchel Field by a final score of 14-5. The win gives the Lions a 23-12 record on the season, eclipsing the team's win total of 22 from the 2015 campaign. Post, meanwhile, drops to 11-23 overall this year.
The Lions pounded 18 hits against the Eagles, with sophomore catcher Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) going 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the victory. Senior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) had a three-hit game with four runs driven in while senior Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) each had two hits and two RBIs. The maroon and white scored four times in the second inning, three times in the third and five runs in the fifth---all against starter Tyler Kovalewich (Colonia, N.J.)---and also added two runs in the sixth inning off of Eagles reliever Anthony Treccariche (Smithtown, N.Y.). Red-shirt junior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) got the party started with a first-pitch home run in the bottom of the second inning.
On the bump, Hiss and red-shirt junior Matt Castaneda (East Meadow, N.Y.) combined for to not let up a hit to the Eagles in the first six innings of play. Lucas Burton (Glendale, N.Y.), Shawn Klotsche (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Anthony Pedraita (Glen Cove, N.Y.) finished off the victory for the Lions.
The Molloy College baseball team will be in action on Friday (Apr. 22) as part of a four-game series with East Coast Conference foe Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. The Lions will host the Mavericks on Saturday (Apr. 23) in a doubleheader at Mitchel Field beginning at 12 p.m. before the teams play in the series finale back at Mercy.
