Baseball Scores 13 Runs In Second And Third, Thumps Queens on Friday By 17-6 Score

Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 15, 2016) - Sophomore center-fielder Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in five runs in the second and third innings as the Molloy College baseball team cruised to a 17-6 romp over Queens College on Friday (Apr. 15) at Mitchel Field. Molloy, with the win, is now 21-9 on the 2016 season with a 6-3 record in East Coast Conference play. The Knights, meanwhile, fall to 13-17 overall and 5-8 in ECC competition.

The maroon and white roughed up senior starter Brandon Burrell (Inwood, N.Y.) in the second inning to the tune of seven runs (only one earned). Sophomore Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double and he crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.). The Lions got their next six runs after two errors were committed by third baseman Diego Gonzalez (College Point, N.Y.); after Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error that brough home Rahn and Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.), the Lions went up 3-0 with the bases loaded. Alberghina stepped to the plate and cleared the bases on Burrell's first pitch: a triple to left-center scored three runs and gave Molloy a 6-0 lead. Junior third baseman Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) closed out the inning with a run-scoring single to give Molloy a 7-0 lead after two innings.

In the third inning of play, senior outfielder Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Galanoudis both singled to start the inning and sophomore catcher Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) brought them home with a two-run single to put the maroon and white up by a 9-0 margin. McCarty advanced to third on a double down the left-field line by senior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) and Alberghina smacked a two-run single to center field to put the Lions ahead by 11 runs and force Burrell from the game. Navetta singled through the left side off of reliever Michael Lamneck (Islip, N.Y.) to get the score up to 12-0 and a sacrifice fly by Gonchar would send the Lions to a 13-run lead after three innings.

The Lions led 17-0 after five innings thanks to an RBI double from Ryan Dillon (Medford, N.Y.), who later scored on a wild pitch, and an RBI double from Alberghina. Queens scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning off of starter Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.), who left after the frame. The junior right hander would allow four runs on seven hits over six innings with four strikeouts to earn the victory. Alberghina ended the game with a 3-for-6 outing and six RBIs while McCarty collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs. Navetta had three hits as well while Podell, Todd and Galanoudis each smacked two hits in the win.

The maroon and white will head to Flushing on Saturday (Apr. 16) for a doubleheader with the Knights. The action will begin at 12 p.m.
