Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2016) - The offense continued its recent hot streak for the Molloy College softball team on Wednesday (Apr. 13) in game one of a doubleheader with Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. The Lions won a 10-0 six-inning mercy rule contest before winning a closer affair in the nightcap, 3-1, at Smith Field. The maroon and white are 25-13 overall and 14-4 in ECC play while Mercy falls to 16-22 overall and 7013 in conference competition.
Game One: Molloy 10, Mercy 0 - Six InningsThe maroon and white have been consistently potent when it comes to putting runs on the board in the first inning of the opening game of a doubleheader, and Wednesday was no exception. The Lions scored six times in the frame and knocked starter Joelle Salisbury (Rotterdam, N.Y.) from the contest after only one-third of an inning. An RBI bunt single by
Olivia Banulski (Bristol, Conn.) scored
Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) to give the Lions a 1-0 lead; sophomore
Sarah Rambo (Eagleville, Pa.) drew a bases-loaded walk for the Lions' second run of the inning. After a wild pitch scored
Brianna Dalton (Northampton, Pa.), Molloy went up 6-0 thanks to a three-run home run by
Milan Botte (Reston, Va.). The other runs for the maroon and white came via the long ball as well: Dalton crushed a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence in the third inning while Balinskas jacked a three-run big fly to left in the sixth inning to get Molloy to the mercy rule victory. Once again, junior pitcher
Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) pitched with efficiency in tossing a six-inning shutout, yielding just four hits and striking out five. Balinskas went 3-for-4 in the contest and fell just a single shy of the cycle while Dalton, Banulski and Botte each had two hits in the victory.
Game Two: Molloy 3, Mercy 1Freshman pitchers dueled in the second game of the doubleheader as
Jenna Turato (Garden City South, N.Y.) and McKaily Cusumano (Monroe, Mich.) each threw four scoreless innings. In the top of the fifth, Molloy went ahead by a run as
Bernadette Mullane (Bellmore, N.Y.) scored on a dropped third strike plus an error on catcher Baylee McCormick (Las Vegas, Nev.). The Mavs scored the tying run in the bottom of the frame as Chelsea Konyar (Halifax, Pa.) drove in a run with a double off of Turato. The Lions would not be denied the sweep, however, as Botte hit an RBI double in the sixth that scored
Alexandra Russo (Coram, N.Y.) to put Molloy ahead 2-1; in the seventh
Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) reached on an error that scored Banulski with an all-important insurance run. Turato tossed a complete game three-hitter with four strikeouts to earn her sixth win of the season. Russo and Botte each had two hits for the maroon and white in the win.
Molloy will take to Brookville on Thursday (Apr. 14) for a crucial conference doubleheader with LIU Post beginning at 3 p.m.
