Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2016) – The Molloy College baseball team swept a doubleheader over LIU Post on Saturday at Mitchel Field. With wins by scores of 5-1 and 3-0, the Lions have taken the first three games of a four-game series with the Pioneers; the last time Molloy won three of four versus LIU Post was back in 2013. Molloy is now 14-6 overall and 3-0 in ECC play while LIU Post falls to 8-11 and 0-3 in conference competition.
Game One: Molloy 5, LIU Post 1The Lions got to starter Dan Jagiello (West Islip, N.Y.) in the bottom of the second inning as
Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and
Christian Todd (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit back-to-back RBI doubles to put Molloy ahed 2-0. Following a balk by Jagiello, sophomore catcher
Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) chopped a ball to second base that recorded a putout but also brought Todd home from third base.
Much like the Lions' 4-1 win over Stonehill back on Mar. 19, sophomore pitcher
Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) needed just those three runs as he was brilliant through eight innings. Catinella surrendered just a solo home run to Kenny Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y.) in the seventh inning; the sophomore yielded just five hits and one run while striking out eight. Catinella improved his record to 4-2 on the season and the Middle Village product has won each of his last two starts. Senior
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) pitched a seamless ninth inning to shut the door on the Pioneers. Molloy tacked on two runs in the eighth inning with an RBI triple by
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) and a run-scoring bunt single from
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.).
Game Two: Molloy 3, LIU Post 0Left-hander
Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) took the mound in the second game of the doubleheader and was immediately staked out to a 1-0 lead thanks to small ball and a wild pitch from Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) that scored Murphy from third base. Arena and Kelly dueled until the fourth inning, when a critical error by second baseman Matt Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) on a ball hit by Murphy brought home two more runs to give the maroon and white a 3-0 lead.
Molloy did not score any more runs in the contest, but that hardly mattered as Kelly was flat-out dominant. Despite only striking out two batters, the southpaw improved his record to 4-0 by tossing a complete-game one-hitter. Kelly allowed just one hit to Jimmy Mendyk (Massapequa, N.Y.) and walked two Pioneers in the victory. In the win,
Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) had a team-high two hits including one of two doubles hit by the maroon and white.
The Lions will go for a four-game sweep to start the conference portion of their campaign on Monday (Mar. 28) at LIU Post in Brookville. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
