Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2016) - The No. 12 Molloy College men's lacrosse team rallied from an early 5-1 deficit to tie the score with the sixth-ranked NYIT Bears as the clock ticked to under seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Lions, the 7-7 stalemate was broken by four unanswered markers by the Bears, as the hosts defended President's Stadium to the tune of an 11-7 victory over the maroon and white on Wednesday (Mar. 23). NYIT is now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in East Coast Conference play; Molloy falls to 6-2 in the 2016 season and 1-2 in conference competition.
Junior attackman
Connor Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) put the Lions on the board in the first quarter on an assist from senior
Kevin Teresky (South Huntington, N.Y.) as Molloy opened up a 1-0 lead with under five minutes gone by in the opening frame. The lead did not last long as NYIT scored five straight goals with junior midfielder Tom Hughes (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) scoring the first and last goals in the spurt to give the Bears a 5-1 lead. To the Lions' credit, the maroon and white did not go away quietly in scoring the next four goals over the next six minutes of game time, spanning both quarters. The goals came from Teresky and fellow seniors
Austin Valenti (Baldwin, N.Y.) and
Peter Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) as well as junior middie
Jon Camposa (Syosset, N.Y.). NYIT led 7-5 at the halftime break as Will Kistinger (Bohemia, N.Y.) scored back-to-back tallies to give the Bears the lead at the midway point of the contest.
Camposa scored the only goal of the third quarter to bring Molloy within one goal, while Slane scored with 6:44 to play in regulation to tie up the score at seven-all. Unfortunately, NYIT wound the clock down on offense and Kistinger finally netted one past
Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) with 2:43 to play in giving the Bears the lead. Two minutes later, the hosts were up 11-7 after markers by Hughes and seniors Shawn Murphy (Holbrook, N.Y.) and Jon Lynott (Massapequa, N.Y.) as the lead became insurmountable for Molloy to come back from.
Teresky had a team-high three points (1G, 2A) while Camposa and Slane both scored a pair of goals. Junior midfielder
Frank Sciulla (Rocky Point, N.Y.) collected six ground balls and went 13-for-22 on face-offs while freshman defender
Mike Durkin (Lake Grove, N.Y.) scooped up four ground balls in the effort. Toomey made nine saves for the maroon and white in cage. For NYIT, Hughes had a five-point afternoon (3G, 2A) while Kistinger added a hat trick and an assist for a four-point game. Lynott had a goal as well as five ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers and Alex Seltzer (Plainview, N.Y.) made 13 saves in cage to pick up the Bears' seventh win of the season.
The Molloy College men's lacrosse team will play its second top-10 opponent of the season when the Lions travel to North Andover, Mass. on Saturday (Mar. 26) to play the fourth-seeded Merrimack College Warriors at 4 p.m.
