Seven-Goal Second Quarter Helps No. 14 Men's Lacrosse Turn Back Georgian Court, 16-5

Box Score LAKEWOOD, N.J. (Mar. 2, 2016) - The fourteenth-ranked Molloy College men's lacrosse team overcame a slow start and an uphill battle with the elements to put away Georgian Court on Wednesday (Mar. 2), winning by a 16-5 score at the GCU Track & Field Complex. Molloy is now 3-0 on the season, while the inaugural season for the Georgian Court men's lacrosse team has begun with an 0-3 start to the 2016 campaign.

Facing a prevailing northwest wind that blew right in the faces of the maroon and white in the first quarter, Molloy's offense sputtered against the first-year Lions while the defense let GCU get on the board first with goals from both Michael Negrete (Magnolia, Del.) and Cory Boyle (Brampton, Ontario, Canada). Down 2-0 with five minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Molloy scored three straight goals to close the opening frame and take a 3-2 lead. Sophomore attacker Tim Steinman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) struck for his second goal of the season with 4:38 remaining in the frame and freshman midfielder Michael Scheuerer (Farmingdale, N.Y.) bagged his first career collegiate marker just 32 seconds later. Then just before the stanza ended, senior midfielder Peter Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) scored his eighth goal of the season on a feed from leading distributor Kevin Teresky (South Huntington, N.Y.) to put the Lions from Long Island ahead of the Lions from New Jersey.

The second quarter ended up being a track meet that favored Molloy, as the Lions scored seven goals in the frame to go into halftime with a 10-4 lead. Clark scored twice as did senior Austin Valenti (Baldwin, N.Y.), while Teresky, Scheuerer and Connor Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) all tallied a goal in the frame as Molloy outshot Georgian Court by a 14-8 margin in the quarter. Teresky opened the scoring in the third quarter with a goal while midfielders Jon Camposa (Syosset, N.Y.) and Tom Graef (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) each scored a marker in the frame; Valenti was able to get his hat trick in the final quarter of play and the maroon and white closed their scoring account with a first career collegiate goal on an empty net by Jerry Papile (Shirley, N.Y.).

Teresky had a team-high five points (2G, 3A) while Steinman added a goal and three assists for a four-point afternoon. In total, ten Lions scored a point with nine players netting a goal and sophomore midfielder Anthony Rowland (West Babylon, N.Y.) collected two assists. Sophomore goalie Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) recovered from a shaky start to earn his third win, making seven saves in cage for Molloy. The maroon and white had a dominant day in the face-off category as well, with junior middie Frank Sciulla (Rocky Point, N.Y.) winning 15-of-23 face-offs and sophomore Dom Raheb (Bellmore, N.Y.) taking the victory on two attempts at X.

Negrete had two goals for Georgian Court while Boyle added a goal and an assist. Freshman Connor Houghton (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) collected two assists while keeper Logan Eisenhart (Mt. Airy, Md.) stopped nine Molloy shots over 60 minutes of time in the cage.

The No. 14 Molloy Lions will head into conference season on Sunday (Mar. 6) with a date against Chestnut Hill College at 1 p.m. in a game being played at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in Lafayette Hill, Pa.
