No. 19 Men's Lacrosse Knocks Off Wheeling Jesuit, 13-11

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2016) - A five-goal day from senior midfielder Peter Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) steered the nineteenth-ranked Molloy College men's lacrosse past Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday (Feb. 27), as the Lions won a 13-11 slugfest at John A. Darcy Field.

Wheeling Jesuit (0-1) opened the scoring in the first quarter on a goal by freshman midfielder Michael Schonhuitt (Westerville, Ohio), but Molloy (2-0) went on a five-goal stretch over the first and second quarters that included three from Clark and one each from Austin Valenti (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Kevin Teresky (South Huntington, N.Y.) as the maroon and white led 5-1 with 11 minutes remaining in the half. The Cardinals scored two in a row but Teresky bagged another goal followed by markers from Casey Kelly (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Connor Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) to grab an 8-3 lead. The margin was 8-4 at halftime on a goal by Dereck Downs (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)---Downs would lead Wheeling Jesuit with four goals in the contest. The Canadian attackman scored on back-to-back possessions in the third to get his team within three goals at 9-6 with 11:50 to go in the frame, but Clark answered with a goal as the Lions went back up by four. After the Rockville Centre native scored his fifth goal with one minute to play in the quarter, Wheeling's Bryce Brochu (Welland, Ontario, Canada) scored on a nifty hidden-ball trick play that fooled everyone at Darcy Field with 33 seconds to go. Molloy won the ensuing face-off and sophomore long-pole Zach Antonette (Seaford, N.Y.) went coast-to-coast on a bouncer that skipped past the goalie for the last goal of the third quarter. The home side led 12-9 but Wheeling scored two goals late to bring the contest within one goal at 12-11. Teresky, however, solidified the victory with a marker at the 13:47 mark of the final frame and the Cardinals could not answer back with one of their own to set up a last-chance situation.

Clark took a team-high 12 shots while Valenti was on the receiving end of a team-best seven ground balls in the win. Sophomore goalie Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) faced a barrage of shots and made eight saves to pick up the win. For Wheeling Jesuit, Downs and Brochu each had a team-high five points and eight shots in the loss.

Molloy will next be in action on Wednesday (Mar. 2) when the Lions take on the Lions of Georgian Court University in Lakewood, N.J. at 3:30 p.m.
