Softball Splits Two in Final Day Of Myrtle Beach Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 21, 2016) - The Molloy College softball team was limited to just four hits in its first contest of the day against New Haven at the Snowbird Softball Freeze-Out Invitational on Sunday (Feb. 21) in Myrtle Beach. The 9-2 loss to the Chargers was quickly forgotten, though, as the Lions romped to a 6-1 victory over Wilmington University in the final game of the tournament to return home with a 2-4 record.

Game One: New Haven 9, Molloy 2
Molloy fell behind early in its contest with the Chargers, as New Haven scored three runs in the first two innings against the Lions' pitching. In the bottom of the second, Molloy got two runs back as Sarah Rambo (Eagleville, Pa.) reached on an error that scored the team's first run before she herself was brought home on an RBI single by Alexandra Russo (Coram, N.Y.). Down 3-2, the Lions' bats were silenced over the final five innings as senior Victoria Cabral (New Britain, Conn.) scattered just two hits in relief and struck out six batters. Meanwhile, senior Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) was tagged for five runs and nine hits over four innings of work as she also had some issues with control (five walks) in taking the loss for the maroon and white.

Game Two: Molloy 6, Wilmington (Del.) 1
In their final game of the invitational, the Lions took advantage of five Wilmington errors and capitalized on a dominant complete-game effort from junior pitcher Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) to grab the victory. Rambo played a big part in the runs early on, as the sophomore struck out for what would have been the third out of the first inning. However, the pitch got away from the catcher and Rambo made it to first base safely while Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) scored. In the next inning, another fielding error allowed Balinskas to reach as freshman Kaitlyn Snyder (Smithtown, N.Y.) crossed home plate to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Wilmington got a run in the top of the fifth inning as Wildcats outfielder Meghan Brown (Sewell, N.J.) slapped a double that scored Jazmeen Llamas (Bakersfield, Calif.) to cut Molloy's lead to one run. In the bottom half of the frame, the maroon and white broke out with a four-run inning to put the game on ice. Again, it was Rambo starting the rally as she drove in Milan Botte (Reston, Va.) with a triple to left field to provide the insurance run. Rambo scored on a sacrifice fly by the very next batter, sophomore Brianna Dalton (Northampton, Pa.). Speed dictated the final two runs as Snyder and Chrissy Heyer (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were able to reach safely and score on a wild pitch and a throwing error. Hawks, meanwhile, tossed a seven-inning masterpiece in limiting the Wildcats to a run on three hits while striking out ten batters to pick up her first win of the 2016 season.

The Molloy College softball team will play a home-opening doubleheader on Mar. 9 against Georgian Court University at Bob Klein Field, beginning at 3 p.m.
