Box Score MISENHEIMER, N.C. (Feb. 21, 2016) - Junior outfielder
Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored twice while sophomore pitcher
Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) tossed six and one-third solid innings as the Molloy College baseball team captured a 5-1 win over Pfeiffer University on Sunday (Feb. 21) at Joe Ferebee Field. The Lions moved to 2-1 on the year in winning their first series of the 2016 season. The loss drops the home Falcons to 2-8 on the year.
Catinella and Pfeiffer starter Anthony Allende (Mt. Pleasant, N.C.) were locked in a scoreless duel for four full innings as both starting pitchers frustrated opposing batters until the top half of the fifth inning. After a lead-off single by Galanoudis started the frame, junior
Austin Nieves (Glendale, N.Y.) drew a walk to set up first and second for the maroon and white with no one out. Junior shortstop
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt to cycle back to the top of the batting order, where lead-off hitter
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) smacked a single up the middle to score two runs and put the Lions on the board first. Pfeiffer got a run back in the bottom of the inning as freshman catcher Ryne Stanley (High Point, N.C.) walloped a pitch from Catinella down the right field line and over the wall for a solo home run.
Catinella worked through the rest of the fifth and sixth innings without avoiding much trouble, and Molloy tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Galanoudis scored on a fielding error by third baseman John Elwood (Indian Trail, N.C.). The Falcons were in business in the bottom of the frame as back-to-back one-out singles chased the sophomore starter from the game. Freshman
Timothy Panetta (Broad Channel, N.Y.) entered the fray and immediately picked off Derek Perry (Belmont, N.C.) from first base before striking out Zach Scudder (Belews Creek, N.C.) to get out of trouble. The Lions would tack on two more runs in the top of the ninth inning, and Guzman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth in his first appearance on the mound this season.
Guzman went 2-for-5 at the dish with two runs batted in while junior third baseman
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) also collected two hits for the maroon and white. From the rubber, Catinella scattered eight hits and surrendered only Stanley's home run while striking out four batters to claim the victory. Allende took the loss, going six innings and yielding three runs (two earned) and seven hits while walking two and fanning five.
The Southern swing for the Molloy College baseball team will continue on Friday (Feb. 26) when the Lions face the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College at 4 p.m. in Myrtle Beach, S.C. as part of the Northeast Challenge.
