Camposa Nets Winner As Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Assumption, 13-12

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2016) - Junior midfielder Jon Camposa (Syosset, N.Y.) scored his fourth goal of the game with 92 seconds to play in regulation and the Molloy College men's lacrosse team held off a late charge from Assumption to claim a 13-12 win over the Greyhounds on Saturday (Feb. 20) at John A. Darcy Field. The thrilling back-and-forth affair was the season-opener for both teams.

Camposa led his side with the four goals on 12 total shots as well as totaling a team-best five points by adding an assist. Three seniors---Kevin Teresky (South Huntington, N.Y.)Austin Valenti (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Peter Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y.)---scored twice in the contest while three other players added a goal as well. Freshman defender Mike Durkin (Lake Grove, N.Y.) made an emphatic statement in his Molloy debut with five ground balls and three caused turnovers for the maroon and white while sophomore goalie Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) made eight saves and earned the win in cage.

For the Greyhounds, freshmen attackers Travis Reid (Raynham, Mass.) and Dan Farrell (Norwood, Mass.) both scored four goals in the loss while four other players tallied a goal apiece. Senior midfielder Nick Guarino (Avon, Conn.) had a game-high six ground balls and also won 14-of-26 at the face-off position for Assumption.

Molloy opened the contest down a goal as Farrell put home the game's first marker in two minutes and 11 seconds. The Lions responded with five straight markers as Camposa accounted for the last two goals in the stretch. Farrell would net his second and Reid scored his first as the buzzer sounded to end the opening period with the maroon and white ahead by two goals. Camposa and Teresky scored consecutive goals to give the Lions a 7-3 lead in the second quarter with nine minutes to play, but Assumption would net the final four goals (two on extra-man opportunities) to tie the game at 7-all going into halftime.

Valenti scored both of his goals in the third period while sophomore Tim Steinman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and junior Connor Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) had back-to-back tallies to give Molloy an 11-9 lead going into the frenetic final period of play. Assumption rallied for the game's tying goal after Aidan Murphy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) brought his side within one with 7:06 to play in regulation. Reid scored his fourth marker less than 30 seconds later to knot the score at 11; Clark and Farrell would trade tallies to tie the game at 12. Good offensive pressure from the maroon and white led to Camposa getting a wide-open look inside the attack box, and his lefty shot screamed past freshman keeper Colby Hamwey (West Yarmouth, Mass.) for the difference-maker in the game.

Molloy will host Wheeling Jesuit on Saturday (Feb. 27) at John A.
