Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2016) - In a matchup of two undefeated teams, Molloy's women's basketball stumbled against the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College. The Spartans began the contest on a 6-0 run, with Molloy getting on the board at the five minute mark on a three-point shot from
Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.). The graduate student would make a jumper nearly two minutes later, bringing the score to 10-5 Saint Thomas Aquinas. The points from Thompson, however, were all the Lions would manage in the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, Thompson would post an additional five points, taking the score to 16-10 Spartans.
Symone Kelly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) sunk a jumper of her own to bring the Lions to within two, but free throws from Kaitlyn McCue (Bergenfield, N.J.) and Adiya Henderson (Troy, N.Y.) took the score back to 19-12. Kellyann Averill (Saugerties, N.Y.) extended the lead to nine points, but Thompson put up a layup at the buzzer to send the Lions into the locker room trailing 21-14.
The Spartans opened up the second half with a ten point run, interrupted by two layups from
Jessica Kalbfleisch (Ridge, N.Y.). Field goals from McCue, Alex Bertolino (Garnerville, N.Y.), and Ruth Adams (San Diego, Calif.) sent the score to 39-18 with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Shantana Kanhoye (South Richmond Hill, N.Y.) gave the Lions 20 points, but the Spartans would end the half with five more points from Adams and Jenna Erickson (Melrose, N.Y.).
In the final frame, Saint Thomas Aquinas once again opened with a five-point run until
McKayla Hernandez (Windermere, Fla.) nabbed a steal that was taken in for a layup on the fast break. In the final quarter,
Maggie Salomone (Narragansett, R.I.),
Ihnacinse Grady (Amityville, N.Y.), and Kanhoye all contributed points for the Lions, but the effort would ultimately fall short as the Spartans picked up the 62-31 win.
With the win, Saint Thomas Aquinas moves to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in East Coast Conference play. The Lions pick up their first loss on the year, brining their record to 4-1 and 0-1 in ECC action. Thompson led the way offensively for the maroon and white, totaling 12 points and three steals. For the Spartans, McCue posted 17 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double.
Molloy returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 26) as they continue conference play against the Mavericks of Mercy College in Valhalla, N.Y. at 2:00 p.m.
