Women's Basketball Earns 65-62 Win over Bloomfield in Home Opener

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2016) – Molloy's women's basketball team came out on top in their first home contest of the campaign, overcoming the Bears of Bloomfield College 65-62. Both teams went back and forth in the first few minutes of the contest, but Molloy put the first points on the board at the 8:23 mark, as Shantana Kanhoye (South Richmond Hill, N.Y.) hit a jumper. The Lions doubled their lead on a layup from Kamala Thompson (Selden, N.Y.). The Bears would go on to take the lead on four points from Tiana Smith (Spring Valley, N.Y.) and a jumper from Deja McKenzie (Baltimore, Md.).  The teams ended the opening frame 16-15 in favor of the Lions.

Briana Carrington (Baltimore, Md.) opened the second quarter with a jumper, but that was countered by Thompson, who posted a jumper and three-point shot of her own. Bloomfield followed up with a nine-point run, stopped by another Thompson field goal. Another eight-point run by the Bears was interrupted by seven points from the Lions, bringing the score to 33-30 Bloomfield. Morgan Taylor (Paterson, N.J.) would launch a three to extend the Bears' lead to six points with just 67 seconds remaining. Molloy would post six points in the final 48 seconds to tie the score as the teams headed to the locker room.

The battle to maintain a lead continued for much of the third quarter, until a layup from Symone Kelly (Wyandanch, N.Y.) sparked a nine-point run for the Lions. The Lions would end the quarter up 52-44. The fourth quarter would open with a good jumper from Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) to put Molloy up by ten points. Bloomfield responded with a three-point shot from Smith, but the Lions quickly jumped back, taking their lead to 11, on points from Kelly and Thompson. The quarter continued, and the Bears eventually cut the Lions' lead down to only one point with just over 90 seconds remaining. Late free throws from McDonald, however, would secure Molloy the 65-62 lead.

The Lions increased their record to 3-0 on the season, and handed Bloomfield their first loss of the year. McDonald, the reigning East Coast Conference Player of the Week, earned her second double-double of the season, totaling a team-high 19 points while pulling down 11 rebounds. The senior also totaled five steals. Thompson, who was also named to the conference honor roll, notched a double-double of her own, securing 10 rebounds and 16 points.

Molloy will return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 19 as they host Goldey-Beacom College at 1:00 p.m. The Molloy Athletic Department will be celebrating an epilepsy awareness weekend supporting the programs and services of the Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island, a division of EPIC Long Island.
