Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2016) - Three goals in the first half were enough to doom the Molloy College field hockey team to a 4-1 loss at Mercy College on Saturday (Oct. 22) in Dobbs Ferry. The Lions fall to 1-11 on the year while Mercy improves to 6-10 on the season.
The first goal came just nine minutes into the contest, as the Mavericks buzzed around the cage and struck against goalie
Arianna Ovadia (East Meadow, N.Y.). Sophomore Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y.) crossed a pass inside the crease to senior midfielder Randi Zorn (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), whose shot was true to form and beat the keeper into the net for the Mavs' opening marker. The hosts scored again nine minutes later off of another cross in front; this time it was Angela Robbins (Linwood, N.J.) feeding senior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif.) for the goal to give Mercy a two-goal edge. That goal came in the 19th miunte of action, and Robbins netted a third marker off of a rebound about 90 seconds later to put the home side ahead by the three-goal margin.
Molloy collected a shot in the second half as
Jenna Stevenson (Rocky Point, N.Y.) tested Mercy goalie Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y.), but the attempt on net was pushed aside by the sophomore for the home side. Then with just about ten minutes remaining in the game, Ballin collected her second goal of the game on a shot inside the circle at the 59:30 mark of the contest. The Lions got one goal back in the final five minutes as senior
Jackie Jamotta (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored her first career goal off a rebound and assist by junior forward
Jessica Waszcak (Northport, N.Y.).
Mercy outshot Molloy 27-1 in the contest with Ballin collecting 12 attempts and 11 targets for the hosts. On defense for the maroon and white, national leader
Ellyn Byrnes (Huntington, N.Y.) made two more defensive saves to boost her season total to 12 defensive saves this fall.
The Lions will host Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday (Oct. 29) at 12 p.m. in Bay Park in the second-to-last contest of the season for the maroon and white. It will be Senior Day, honoring Ovadia, Stevenson, Jamotta and
Jillian Barbieri (Lake Grove, N.Y.).
